Chapter 1 - THE DOG WHO REMEMBERED
Daniel Cross had survived war, loss, and four years of raising his daughter while carrying the memory of the wife he had buried.
Maya Bennett Cross had been a Navy trauma nurse, Daniel’s wife, and the only human his retired combat German Shepherd, Koda, trusted as deeply as Daniel himself.
Four years earlier, Daniel had been told Maya was killed during an attack on an overseas medical convoy. Her remains had supposedly been identified through military DNA records. Daniel received a folded flag, attended a closed-casket funeral, and watched the woman he loved disappear beneath the earth.
Koda never recovered.
Neither did Daniel.
But life continued.
Before Maya’s final deployment, she and Daniel had gone through fertility treatment. One embryo remained frozen. After Maya’s death, paperwork bearing her signature allowed Daniel to proceed with a gestational surrogate.
That embryo became Lily.
Now three years old, Lily was Daniel’s entire world.
One afternoon, Daniel brought Lily to St. Vincent Hospital for another appointment concerning unexplained blood abnormalities doctors had struggled to understand.
While Daniel answered a phone call, Lily sat in the waiting room hugging her stuffed rabbit.
Then a nurse walked past.
Her badge read CLAIRE ROWAN.
Daniel barely noticed her.
Koda did.
The German Shepherd froze.
His ears lifted.
For the first time in four years, the sadness disappeared from his eyes.
Ignoring Daniel’s command, Koda approached Claire and pressed his face gently into her hands—the exact greeting he had used every night when Maya returned home.
Claire began crying without understanding why.
Then Lily reached for her.
When Claire examined Lily’s chart, she noticed a rare inherited compatibility marker linked to an unusual blood phenotype.
Claire had the same marker.
So had Maya.
Claire looked at Lily.
Then at Daniel.
“Daniel,” she whispered, although he could not remember telling her his first name, “has anyone ever told you why Lily has the same rare medical marker as Maya?”
Daniel stopped breathing.
Maya had been dead for four years.
