Chapter 7 - VANESSA'S DESPERATE GAMBIT

My blood ran cold. The emerald gown felt like a suffocating cage as I bolted toward the Plaza exit, Arthur Sterling running right behind me.

“Get the chopper on the roof!” I screamed into my radio to my father. “Now!”

In less than four minutes, my father’s black helicopter lifted off from the rooftop of the Plaza Hotel, roaring across the midnight Manhattan skyline toward St. Jude’s Memorial. The city below was a blur of neon and concrete, but all I could see was Lily’s smiling face in her hospital bed.

“The hospital’s backup generators failed simultaneously,” Father said, his hands flying across the tactical communications board inside the cabin. “Someone planted an electromagnetic pulse device in the basement transformer room. All electronic locks on the pediatric wing are offline.”

“Daniel didn't have the technical expertise to build an EMP,” I said, loading a security tablet with hospital floor plans. “Vanessa didn't work alone either. Julian had a secondary cleanup crew.”

“Vanessa escaped from the transit van,” Father revealed grimly, reading a live bulletin from the NYPD. “The transport vehicle was broadsided three blocks from the federal courthouse forty minutes ago. Two armed men pulled her from the wreckage.”

Vanessa knew she was facing life in prison without parole. She had nothing left to lose. And in her twisted, psychopathic mind, she believed that if she took Lily, she could force me to trade the encryption keys and secure an extraction flight out of the country.

The helicopter descended aggressively onto the St. Jude’s helipad, the landing gear slamming onto the concrete before the rotors had even slowed.

I didn't wait for the stairs. I kicked off my high heels, ripped the bottom hem of my silk gown for mobility, and sprinted through the emergency access doors into the dark hospital corridor.

Emergency red strobe lights pulsed rhythmically along the walls. The air smelled of ozone and smoke. Two Vale security guards lay unconscious near the nursing station, neutralized by stun batons.

I drew the small stun-taser from my father’s emergency kit and moved down the hallway, my bare feet silent against the linoleum.

Room 412—Lily’s suite—stood wide open.

Inside, the moonlight cut through the blinds, casting slashes of silver across the room. Lily’s bed was empty, the IV lines severed with surgical scissors.

“Looking for your daughter, Claire?”

A voice rasped from the shadows behind the bathroom door.

Vanessa stepped into the moonlight. Her face was bruised and bloody from the van crash, her expensive clothes torn, her eyes wild with manic hysteria. In her left hand, she held Lily, whose mouth was covered with duct tape. In her right hand, Vanessa held a heavy medical scalpel pressed against my daughter’s throat.

Lily’s eyes were wide with terror, tears streaming down her pale cheeks.

“Mommy!” Lily’s muffled cry broke through the tape.

“Let her go, Vanessa,” I said, keeping my voice steady, though my heart felt like it was tearing through my ribs. “Julian has already been arrested by federal marshals. Daniel is in solitary confinement. There is no syndicate. There is no getaway flight. It’s over.”

“It’s not over until I get to the coast!” Vanessa shrieked, pressing the steel blade closer to Lily’s skin. “You’re going to call your father right now. You’re going to order that helicopter to fly me to an airstrip in New Jersey, and you’re going to wire ten million dollars to my account in Panama! If anyone follows us, I swear to God I’ll cut her!”

“You won't make it to New Jersey,” I said, taking a slow, deliberate half-step forward. “The entire tri-state area is on lockdown.”

“Don't test me, Claire!” Vanessa screamed, her hand trembling violently. “You think you’re so smart because you were born rich! You had everything—the patents, the money, Daniel! I had to claw for every scrap! Daniel was supposed to leave you and give me the company! You ruined my life!”

“Daniel never loved you, Vanessa,” I said softly, locking my eyes with hers. “He used you to steal my medication from the nightstand. When the fire started, he carried you down the stairs because you had the flash drive in your purse—not because he cared if you lived or died. The second he was arrested, he offered to testify against you to save his own skin.”

“You’re lying!” Vanessa sobbed, her grip wavering for a fraction of a second. “He loved me!”

In that split second of hesitation, Lily did something extraordinary.

She remembered her self-defense training from the Vale summer academy. Lily stomped her hard heel down onto Vanessa’s bare foot and bit fiercely into Vanessa’s wrist.

Vanessa shrieked in pain, dropping the scalpel.

I lunged across the room like a tigress, driving my shoulder directly into Vanessa’s chest. We crashed against the medical cart, instruments and glass vials shattering across the floor. Vanessa clawed at my face, but I grabbed her wrist, twisting it until bone popped, and drove the stun-taser directly into her neck.

Five million volts surged through her body.

Vanessa’s eyes rolled back, and she collapsed limp onto the shattered glass.

I didn't even look at her. I spun around and scooped Lily into my arms, holding her so tightly against my chest that I could feel every beat of her tiny heart.

“I’ve got you, baby,” I wept, kissing her forehead over and over. “Mommy’s got you. You’re safe.”

My father rushed through the door with four armed SWAT officers, his weapon drawn. He stopped in his tracks, seeing Vanessa unconscious on the floor and Lily wrapped safely in my arms.

Father holstered his weapon, walked over, and wrapped his massive arms around both of us, resting his chin on my head.

“The falcon protects her nest,” Father whispered, his voice cracking with rare emotion. “Always.”
