Chapter 3 - BLOODLINE AND SATELLITES

Arthur Sterling stepped forward, placing a thick stack of leather-bound dossiers before every board member. He adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses and cleared his throat, his voice filling the cavernous boardroom with courtroom precision.

“As of 6:00 a.m. this morning,” Sterling announced, “the emergency intervention clause of Trust 904 has been triggered under Section 12-B: Criminal Abandonment and Breach of Fiduciary Duty. All voting proxies previously held by Daniel Vance are null and void. Effective immediately, Claire Vale Vance resumes her role as Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer of Vance Holdings.”

“Vale?” Marcus Webb gasped, leaning forward to inspect the legal filing. “Claire... you’re Sebastian Vale’s daughter?”

“The only daughter,” I replied calmly.

Daniel lunged toward the table, his hands slamming onto the wood. “This is a coup! I built this company! My name is on the front of the building! You were just a housewife drawing sketches in the sunroom!”

“Those 'sketches' were the structural damping systems currently holding up twelve skyscrapers in Dubai, Tokyo, and New York,” I replied, opening my tablet to display the patent registration logs. “Every line of code, every architectural model, and every municipal permit was filed under my personal encryption keys. You couldn't even balance a structural load calculation without calling me into your home office at midnight.”

“You lied to me!” Daniel shouted, veins pulsing along his neck. “For seven years, you let me believe you were an orphan from upstate! You watched me struggle to secure credit lines while your billionaire father owned half the aerospace industry!”

“I wanted a husband who loved me for who I was, not for my father’s checkbook,” I said, meeting his bloodshot eyes. “And for seven years, I gave you my designs, my loyalty, and my silence. But last night, you showed me exactly what you’re worth. You traded your daughter’s life for a photo opportunity with your mistress.”

“That’s slander!” Vanessa shrieked, jumping to her feet. “Daniel saved my life! The smoke was suffocating! He had to make a split-second decision!”

“Let’s talk about that decision,” I said.

I pressed a button on the remote control in my hand. The massive projector screen behind the boardroom table flickered to life. Instead of corporate charts, high-definition thermal footage began to play.

“Vale Aeronautics operates the Aegis-4 low-orbit monitoring network,” I explained to the stunned board members. “At 2:03 a.m.—ten minutes before the hotel fire alarm was pulled—thermal imaging recorded two individuals entering Room 1702. Here is Daniel Vance and Vanessa Cole.”

The footage zoomed in with terrifying clarity, showing timestamps and heat signatures.

“At 2:08 a.m., Miss Cole is seen walking into Room 1704 through the connecting door, opening the nightstand drawer, and removing a cylindrical object—Lily’s epinephrine pen—before placing it into her designer handbag.”

Gasps erupted around the boardroom. Vanessa turned paper-white, her hand flying to her mouth.

“At 2:11 a.m.,” I continued, advancing the video, “Mr. Vance ignited a cluster of lithium-ion batteries inside the waste receptacle of Room 1702. You didn’t just abandon us, Daniel. You set the fire. You intended for the east corner of the seventeenth floor to be consumed completely before the municipal fire department could arrive.”

Daniel took a frantic step toward the side exit, but two Vale security officers immediately blocked the door, their arms crossed over tactical vests.

“You’re insane!” Daniel stammered, sweat pouring down his forehead. “That video is fabricated! It’s deepfake technology from your father’s lab!”

“The raw telemetry and original sensor data have already been delivered to the United States Attorney’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” Sterling said smoothly. “Detective Briggs from the Major Crimes Division is currently waiting in the lobby with an arrest warrant for attempted first-degree murder, arson, and corporate fraud.”

Daniel’s knees gave out. He grabbed the edge of a sideboard to keep from falling. “Claire... please. Think of Lily. You wouldn’t put her father in prison. We can talk about this. I was confused, the smoke... Vanessa manipulated me!”

“Daniel!” Vanessa screamed in disbelief. “You told me she was worth sixty million in life insurance! You promised we’d take the patents to Singapore!”

“Shut up! Shut your mouth, Vanessa!” Daniel lunged at her, but the security team moved with terrifying speed, pinning him against the wall in a split second.

The boardroom doors opened again, and Detective Briggs stepped inside, handcuffs gleaming under the fluorescent lights. “Daniel Vance, Vanessa Cole, you are under arrest. You have the right to remain silent.”

As the steel cuffs clicked around Daniel’s wrists, he looked back at me, his eyes filled with sheer panic. “Claire! You can’t strip my shares! I still own forty-nine percent of the operating company! You can’t build Apex without me!”

I stood up from the head of the table, picking up my pen. “By 5:00 p.m. today, Vance Holdings will be placed into Chapter 11 restructuring. All assets will be liquidated and acquired by Vale Urban Development. Your shares, Daniel, will be worth precisely zero dollars and zero cents.”

As the police dragged Daniel and Vanessa down the corridor, their frantic screams echoing across the marble lobby, Marcus Webb stood up and adjusted his tie.

“Welcome back, Miss Vale,” he said quietly. “What are your orders?”

I looked out the panoramic window toward the skyline. “Call the engineering team. We have an empire to rebuild—and a traitor’s name to erase from every cornerstone in this city.”
