Chapter 6 - SHADOWS IN THE DARK

"You really should have taken that private jet to Chicago, David," Julian said, his gravelly voice carrying an eerie, mocking cadence that echoed off the high vaulted ceilings.
He stepped fully into the ambient glow of the living room fireplace, rain dripping from his dark canvas coat onto the antique Persian rug. Up close, the burn scars on his neck were vicious, remnants of the staged explosion he had orchestrated eight years ago. His eyes were hollow, feverish, burning with the desperate madness of a dying man clinging to survival at any cost.
Evelyn stood beside him, her pistol leveled steadily at my chest. The grandmotherly mask was completely gone; her face was cold, reptilian, and devoid of humanity.
"Where is the girl, David?" Evelyn demanded, her voice devoid of its usual melodic cadence. "I checked her bedroom three minutes ago. You moved her."
I took a slow, deliberate sip of my bourbon, leaning back into the leather armchair without flinching.
"She’s somewhere you will never reach, Evelyn," I said calmly.
Julian let out a dry, rattling laugh that turned into a wet cough. He wiped his mouth with the back of his glove, glaring at me with raw venom. "You think you’re clever, Vance? You think your billions make you untouchable? You stole my life. You married my woman, you lived in my social circles, and you raised a child who carries the only genetic sequence capable of keeping me alive!"
"You tried to murder Sarah's father for money, Julian," I said, keeping my eyes fixed on Evelyn’s trigger finger. "You faked your death like a coward, lived like a rat in the sewers for eight years, and now you want to butcher a seven-year-old child to buy yourself a few more months of miserable existence."
Julian’s face twisted into unbridled fury. He stepped forward, raising his fist, but Evelyn sharply raised her hand.
"Control yourself, Julian!" Evelyn snapped. "He’s stalling. He wants us to make a mistake."
She turned her icy glare back to me. "David, you are a businessman. Let’s make this simple. Tell us where Sarah took Lily, authorize the $40 million wire transfer from your terminal, and we will let you and Sarah walk away. We only need the child for a four-week medical procedure in the Dominican Republic. After that, she will be returned to you unharmed."
"Do you really think I'm that stupid, Evelyn?" I sneered. "Marcus intercepted the cargo manifest for the Gulfstream at Westchester Airport. You sold Lily to an offshore syndicate. There is no return flight."
Evelyn’s eyes narrowed into slits. For the first time, a flicker of genuine shock crossed her face.
"How did you—"
"I’m not a passive hedge-fund manager, Evelyn," I whispered. "I built my wealth by anticipating every hostile takeover."
At that exact second, I kicked the heavy oak coffee table with all my strength.
The 200-pound slab of solid wood slammed directly into Evelyn’s knees with a sickening crack. She screamed in agony, her pistol discharging into the ceiling plaster as she collapsed to the floor.
Julian lunged forward with blinding speed, drawing his hunting knife and slashing downward toward my throat.
I ducked beneath the blade, grabbed his wrist with both hands, and drove my knee savagely into his ribs. Julian grunted, but his sheer adrenaline and desperation made him surprisingly strong. He slammed his forehead into my nose, sending a burst of white-hot pain and blood across my vision.
We crashed into the grand bookcase, shattering glass shelves and scattering antique leather volumes across the floor. Julian slashed wildly, catching my left shoulder, the razor-sharp steel slicing through my shirt and skin.
I ignored the searing pain, swept Julian's legs out from under him, and mounted him on the floor, raining heavy, brutal punches into his scarred face. Blood sprayed from his nose and lips.
"Where is the offshore buyer?" I roared, gripping his throat.
Julian choked, blood bubbling between his teeth, but he began to laugh—a maniacal, broken cackle.
"It doesn't... matter..." he wheezed. "You’re too late, Vance. My men... they didn't wait for the airport. They tracked Marcus’s van from the moment it left your gate."
Cold dread dropped through my stomach.

"The Catskills cabin..." Julian hissed, his eyes gleaming with triumphant malice. "They’re already there. By now, your wife is dead... and your daughter is in the cage."
