Chapter 4 - A WEB OF BITTER LIES

Sarah stumbled backward against the mahogany console table, her chest heaving as if the air had been sucked out of the grand foyer.

"David... why... why would you say that name?" she whispered, her voice cracking with pure terror. "Julian is dead. He died eight years ago. You know what that time did to me."

I didn't answer immediately. I watched her micro-expressions—the trembling lower lip, the dilated pupils, the sheer panic in her posture. This was not the reaction of a cold-blooded conspirator; this was the reaction of a deeply traumatized hostage.

I closed the distance between us, took her icy hands in mine, and led her into my soundproofed private office. I locked the heavy oak door and drew the blackout curtains.

"Sit down, Sarah," I commanded gently.

"David, you’re scaring me," she cried, tears welling in her green eyes. "What is happening? Did someone mention Julian? Was there an article in the papers?"

I took out my phone and placed it flat on the desk between us. I brought up the telephoto image I had taken two hours earlier at the Stamford warehouse—Julian Cross, standing under the industrial light, holding Lily's chin.

Sarah looked down at the screen.

A strangled gasp tore from her throat. She clamped both hands over her mouth, her eyes bulging with absolute disbelief. She dropped to her knees beside the desk, shaking violently as if she were having a seizure.

"No... no, no, dear God, no..." she sobbed, rocking back and forth. "He’s dead... Mother swore he drowned... she showed me the police report..."

"Sarah, listen to me carefully," I knelt beside her, gripping her shoulders firmly. "Your mother is working with Julian. She has been funding him for eight years. Today, she took Lily to him. He took a DNA swab from our daughter."

Sarah looked up at me, her face pale as a ghost. "Bone marrow," she whispered, her voice barely audible.

"What did you say?"

Sarah’s voice trembled as memories broke through years of psychological suppression. "Six months before Julian disappeared... he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of acute myeloid leukemia. He needed a rare genetic match. None of his family matched. My father refused to fund his experimental treatments because he discovered Julian was embezzling from our family foundation."

She grabbed my forearms, her nails digging through my shirt. "A week later, my father had a sudden fatal 'heart attack' in his study. And two weeks after that, Julian’s boat exploded. Mother told me Julian had died in despair... but she warned me that Julian had dangerous associates who would hunt me down if I ever questioned the estate's finances."

The puzzle pieces snapped together with terrifying clarity.

Evelyn and Julian had murdered Sarah’s father when he threatened to expose them. They faked Julian’s death to escape criminal indictment, hiding him away while keeping him alive with black-market medical treatments. And now, Julian’s leukemia had relapsed. He needed a genetic match for a bone marrow transplant—and Lily, sharing blood ties through Sarah's lineage, was his target.

"Mother has been controlling my trusts," Sarah wept, tears soaking my collar. "Every time I tried to look into the accounts, she told me that digging into the past would destroy our family. She was protecting him all along!"

Suddenly, my desk phone buzzed with an urgent priority signal from Marcus.

I put it on speaker. "Speak, Marcus."

"David, we just intercepted Evelyn’s encrypted comms," Marcus’s voice cut through the room like a scalpel. "Julian isn't just taking bone marrow. He has brokered a deal with an illegal human trafficking and organ syndicate out of Eastern Europe. They’re using a private Gulfstream IV leaving Westchester Airport tomorrow night at 11:45 PM. Once they harvest the marrow in an offshore clinic in the Caribbean, they are not bringing Lily back. They plan to stage an accidental drowning at your beach house to cover their tracks."

Sarah let out a bloodcurdling scream, but I clamped my hand over her mouth, pulling her tightly against my chest.

"They won't get within ten feet of her," I growled into the phone, my voice dropping into an octave of lethal resolve. "Marcus, what's our tactical status?"

"I have six operators staging in Stamford right now," Marcus replied. "We can hit the warehouse."

"No," I countered immediately. "Julian has counter-surveillance and Evelyn is still in the cottage. If they suspect we know, they will trigger their escape protocol and vanish with sleeper assets. We play their game. We let them think the trap is working."

I looked down at Sarah. "Where is Lily right now?"

"She’s upstairs in her playroom... with Evelyn," Sarah gasped, her eyes wide with frantic dread.

At that exact moment, the heavy brass door handle of my private office began to rattle from the outside.

Then came Evelyn’s sweet, venomous voice through the wood: "David? Sarah darling? Are you two in there? Lily is asking for her father... and I have some paperwork for the family trust that needs your urgent signature."
