Chapter 4 - THE SHADOW OVER LAKE FOREST

The perimeter alarms at the Whitmore estate did not blare with loud sirens. Instead, subtle amber lights began pulsing along the baseboards of the corridors, accompanied by the muffled thumps of hydraulic security shutters sealing the first-floor windows with ballistic steel.
"How did Antonio Castiglione obtain our localized satellite relay?" Charles demanded, his voice devoid of panic, replaced by the lethal calm of an old general.
Julian was already racking the slide of an automatic carbine taken from a concealed wall locker. "They've had a wiretap on Moretti's central telecom switch for forty-eight hours. When Vincent blasted an unencrypted emergency override across all Chicago law enforcement channels trying to find Emily's vehicle, the Castigliones ran the same license plate data. They realized the girl Vincent would tear the city apart to find was the ultimate leverage."
Emily stood, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "They know I'm carrying his child?"
"If they don't know yet, they will the moment they take you," Julian said grimly, tossing a lightweight Kevlar vest toward Charles. "Mr. Whitmore, we need to move to the subterranean bunker beneath the boathouse immediately. The lake is our only clear extraction corridor."
Outside, the first sharp crack of suppressed rifle fire broke through the rhythmic crash of the waves.
Two miles away on the northbound interstate, Vincent Moretti was driving his Continental like a guided missile through traffic, his knuckles white on the steering wheel. Beside him, Marco was frantically monitoring three different police scanners and a tactical radio.
Suddenly, Marco’s radio shrieked with encrypted chatter from a mercenary frequency. Marco listened for three seconds, his face turning the color of wet chalk.
"Vincent," Marco said, his voice barely a whisper. "Pull off at the next exit. We need to turn around."
"I'm not turning around!" Vincent roared, weaving between two semi-trucks at over a hundred miles per hour. "Whitmore thinks his money makes him untouchable. I don't care if I have to drive through his front gates myself, I am seeing her!"
"Vincent, shut up and listen to me!" Marco screamed, grabbing the steering wheel and forcing Vincent's attention. "Antonio Castiglione’s hit squad just breached Whitmore’s Lake Forest outer line! Three technical vans, twelve heavy shooters with military ordinance! They aren't going there to negotiate with Charles. They're going there to slaughter everyone and drag Emily to their compound in Gary!"
The Continental swerved violently as Vincent slammed the brakes, his mind short-circuiting.
Antonio Castiglione. The sadist who had murdered Vincent’s uncle eight years ago and dissolved his body in an industrial acid vat. A monster who viewed women and children as disposable bargaining chips. And Emily—gentle, fragile Emily who cried when strays were caught in the winter freeze—was trapped in a house surrounded by his death squad.
"Call every crew," Vincent commanded, his voice dropping into a register so cold, so devoid of humanity, that even Marco shuddered. "Tell them to drop whatever they are doing. Forget the federal heat. Forget the rules of engagement. Call the Tartaglia brothers, call the South Side hitters, call everybody. If Antonio Castiglione so much as breathes the air in her room, I will skin every man who shares his bloodline alive."
He slammed his foot down on the gas. The Continental surged forward, hurtling toward the wealthy enclave of Lake Forest.
Back at the estate, the sound of glass shattering echoed from the west wing. Gunfire erupted—the disciplined double-taps of Whitmore's private security trading rounds with the aggressive, sustained fully automatic fire of the Castiglione mercenaries.
Julian led Emily and Charles down a hidden spiral staircase behind the library bookshelves, descending into a concrete tunnel that smelled of damp earth and motor oil. The distant thuds of grenades rattling the floor above them made the concrete dust shower down on Emily's hair.
"Keep moving, Emily!" Julian urged, keeping his weapon raised, his eyes sweeping the dim subterranean corridor. "The boat is fueled. We can reach international waters across the Canadian border within six hours."
They reached the boathouse at the end of the tunnel. Through the iron grating, Emily could see a forty-foot stealth interceptor craft bobbing in the dark, churning waters of the slip. But before Julian could reach the control panel to open the aquatic bay doors, the heavy steel door behind them was blown off its hinges with a deafening blast of C4.
The shockwave threw Emily to the ground. She rolled onto her side, shielding her stomach with both arms, gasping for air as acrid gray smoke filled the boathouse.
Through the haze, four men wearing tactical gear and black balaclavas advanced, their submachine guns raised. Julian fired three rapid shots, dropping the lead gunman, but a spray of return fire caught him in the shoulder, spinning him violently against the concrete wall.
"Julian!" Emily cried out.
Charles moved to stand over his fallen protégé, raising an antique snub-nosed revolver, but a burly mercenary kicked the weapon from the old man's hand with brutal efficiency, striking Charles across the face with the butt of his rifle. Charles collapsed onto the decking, blood blooming across his silver hair.
"Mr. Whitmore!" Emily screamed, trying to crawl toward her uncle, but heavy boots stopped in front of her.
A man stepped forward, pulling down his mask to reveal the sneering, scarred face of Antonio Castiglione’s eldest son, Leo. He looked down at Emily with predatory amusement, his dark eyes sweeping over her trembling form.

"Well, well," Leo chuckled, his voice thick with malicious satisfaction. "The little stray cat Vincent threw out into the cold. My father sends his regards, sweetheart. He heard a rumor that you might be carrying the next Moretti king." Leo reached down, his gloved fingers clamping painfully around Emily’s jaw, forcing her to look up into his cold eyes. "Let’s go see if your baby’s father loves his pride more than his bloodline."
Suddenly, from the top of the stairs behind them, the sound of a vehicle engine roaring through interior walls shattered the chaos.
