Chapter 1 - THE MASK SLIPS IN COLD BLOOD

I am Dominic Vance, head of the Vance crime syndicate in New York, a man who built an empire on iron discipline and zero tolerance for betrayal. I was sitting at the head of a mahogany boardroom table in Manhattan, finalizing a fifty-million-dollar waterfront deal with rival bosses, when my encrypted personal phone buzzed against the polished wood. Only three people had that number. I almost ignored it to maintain my cold demeanor, but a gut feeling made me swipe the screen.

Before I could even speak, a terrified voice sobbed into the receiver. "Mr. Vance, please... come home now! Miss Vanessa... she’s beating your mother!"

My blood ran cold. The atmosphere in the boardroom instantly died. Without uttering a single word to the cartel bosses, I stood up, kicked back my chair, and charged out the heavy doors. My bodyguards didn't hesitate; six armed men scrambled behind me as we sprinted down to the subterranean garage. Seconds later, a convoy of three pitch-black Cadillacs tore through the rainy New York streets, running red lights and weaving dangerously through afternoon traffic. My knuckles turned white against the leather steering wheel. Vanessa was my fiancée, a high-society beauty I had lavished with diamonds, luxury cars, and absolute trust. The thought of her hurting my frail, seventy-year-old mother, Sophia, was an impossible nightmare.

Ten grueling minutes later, we screeched to a halt outside my gated estate in Long Island. The front doors swung wide open in the wind. Stepping into the foyer, my heart sank into my chest. The grand entrance was in total ruin. Venetian crystal vases lay shattered across the marble floor, priceless oil paintings were torn from the walls, and the household staff stood frozen against the columns, paralyzed by fear.

Then I heard the shrill, violent screech coming from the drawing room.

I rounded the corner and stopped dead in my tracks. My mother was cowering on the hardwood floor, bleeding from her lip, arms raised desperately to protect her face. Standing directly over her was Vanessa, her hair disheveled, her eyes burning with pure rage. She was clutching a heavy brass statuette above her head, her face twisted into a demonic sneer as she screamed vile insults at my weeping mother.

My mother caught my gaze through her tears, her voice barely a whisper. "Son... please don't let her hurt anyone else."

Vanessa raised the weapon higher, ready to bring it smashing down. I reached for my sidearm, but my legs felt glued to the floor in absolute disbelief as time seemed to slow to an agonizing crawl. The woman I was supposed to marry in two weeks was about to execute the person who gave me life.

Seeing the woman I loved turn into a ruthless monster shattered my reality in a single second. But as the horrific truth unraveled inside my home, I realized the nightmare was far bigger than I ever imagined.
