Chapter 8 - The Night Vanessa Took Everything

The Coast Guard located the helicopter seventy miles west of Los Angeles.

It landed on a private yacht registered through a Cayman Islands company.

The yacht’s name was Seraphine.

Daniel knew it.

Malcolm had used it for corporate entertainment years earlier before transferring ownership.

Federal authorities prepared interception.

A storm complicated everything.

By midnight, wind battered the Pacific and waves rose high enough to make a helicopter approach dangerous.

Daniel boarded a Coast Guard cutter with Andrew and Maria.

Samuel stayed behind coordinating evidence.

“You’re not coming onto the yacht,” Daniel told Maria.

She stared at him.

“My son is there.”

“That is exactly why.”

“You think I’m going to sit safely below deck while someone holds Noah?”

Andrew touched her shoulder.

“Maria.”

She turned on him.

“You disappeared for six years because you thought you were protecting us. Do not make decisions for me again.”

Andrew had no answer.

The cutter approached Seraphine at 1:36 a.m.

The yacht refused radio commands.

Then gunfire erupted from the upper deck.

Coast Guard officers returned fire.

Daniel remained behind armored cover while tactical personnel boarded.

Andrew followed despite being ordered not to.

Daniel followed Andrew.

The deck rolled violently beneath them.

They found Ethan near the stairwell.

Alive.

Bleeding from his side.

He lifted both hands.

“I’m done.”

Daniel grabbed him.

“Where is Noah?”

“Lower cabin.”

“Vanessa?”

“Bridge.”

“Malcolm?”

Ethan shook his head.

“He left on the tender twenty minutes ago.”

Daniel cursed.

Ethan caught his sleeve.

“Wait.”

“What?”

“She has explosives.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

“Vanessa said if she can’t leave with the evidence, nobody leaves.”

Andrew heard.

He ran toward the lower decks.

Daniel followed.

They found Maria already there.

She had ignored every order.

The cabin door was locked.

“Noah!” she screamed.

A small voice answered.

“Mom!”

Maria nearly collapsed.

Andrew kicked the door.

Daniel joined him.

The frame cracked.

Again.

Again.

The door broke.

Noah stood inside wearing an oversized life jacket.

Maria dropped to her knees and grabbed him.

The boy buried his face against her.

Andrew crouched beside them.

For several seconds, the war disappeared.

A father.

A mother.

A child.

Then the yacht alarm began screaming.

Daniel looked upward.

“Everybody move.”

They ran.

On the bridge, Vanessa stood beside the controls.

Her wedding dress was gone.

She wore dark pants and a soaked blouse.

Her hair whipped around her face.

Daniel entered alone.

“It’s over.”

Vanessa laughed.

“You keep saying that.”

“Malcolm abandoned you.”

Her expression changed.

“He’ll come back.”

“No.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“He used you.”

“My father—”

“Your father is in federal custody.”

Vanessa stopped breathing.

Daniel continued.

“Victor told us everything.”

“He would never.”

“He told us Malcolm ordered Andrew’s murder.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“He’s lying.”

“He told us you were never supposed to move Noah from Malibu.”

Her eyes filled with panic.

“No.”

“Malcolm needed someone disposable.”

“Stop.”

“You.”

“Stop.”

Daniel looked at the detonator in her hand.

“Give it to me.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears for the first time.

Not remorse.

Collapse.

“I was supposed to own this.”

“Own what?”

“Your name.”

Daniel stared at her.

Vanessa laughed through tears.

“My father spent my entire childhood telling me that the Whitmores stole our future. Every birthday. Every dinner. Every time I asked why we couldn’t live normally.”

She looked around the yacht.

“He raised me for this.”

Daniel’s anger softened only enough to recognize the tragedy without excusing the monster it created.

“You can stop.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“If I surrender, there is nothing left.”

“There is your life.”

Vanessa stared at him.

Then looked toward the sea.

Daniel moved.

She raised the detonator.

“Don’t.”

A wave slammed the yacht.

Vanessa lost balance.

Daniel caught her wrist.

The detonator fell.

It hit the floor.

A red light began flashing.

Daniel stared.

Vanessa whispered:

“Oh God.”

“What did you do?”

“I armed it earlier.”

“How long?”

She looked at the timer display.

FORTY-THREE SECONDS.

Daniel grabbed the detonator.

“How do we stop it?”

“You can’t.”

He ran.

“ABANDON SHIP!”

Officers shouted.

Maria carried Noah toward the Coast Guard boarding line.

Andrew saw Daniel.

“What?”

“Bomb!”

Andrew took Noah from Maria and jumped toward the cutter.

Maria followed.

Daniel reached the rail.

Vanessa remained behind him.

He turned.

She stood frozen.

“Vanessa!”

She shook her head.

“Go.”

Daniel stared at the woman he once planned to spend his life with.

Then he went back.

He grabbed her arm.

“What are you doing?”

“Nobody else dies tonight.”

They reached the rail as fire erupted below deck.

Daniel pushed Vanessa toward a rescue officer.

Then the explosion hit.

The world became white.

Daniel felt himself thrown through the air.

He hit freezing water.

Above him, burning debris fell into the Pacific.

He surfaced coughing.

“Daniel!”

Andrew’s voice.

Daniel turned.

The cutter lights moved through the smoke.

Maria screamed Noah’s name.

Daniel’s heart stopped.

Andrew stood at the rail.

Alone.

“Where is he?” Daniel shouted.

Andrew looked into the black water.

“He was right beside me!”

Maria screamed again.

“Noah!”

A tiny orange life jacket appeared between two enormous waves.

Then vanished beneath the surface.

Andrew jumped.

Maria tried to follow.

Officers restrained her.

Daniel swam toward the place Noah disappeared.

Ten seconds.

Twenty.

Thirty.

Nothing.

Daniel dove.

Darkness.

Cold.

Debris.

His lungs burned.

Then his hand struck fabric.

He grabbed.

Pulled upward.

Daniel broke the surface with Noah in his arms.

The boy was motionless.

“Noah!”

Andrew reached them.

Together they dragged him toward the rescue boat.

A medic started CPR.

Maria climbed aboard.

“Noah! Baby, please!”

Daniel stood dripping beside her.

One minute.

Two.

Nothing.

The medic continued.

Andrew lowered his head.

Maria sobbed.

Then Noah coughed.

Water spilled from his mouth.

He inhaled.

Maria screamed with relief.

Andrew collapsed beside him.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Alive.

Noah was alive.

Then a Coast Guard officer approached.

“Mr. Whitmore.”

Daniel turned.

“We recovered Vanessa.”

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“And Malcolm?”

The officer looked toward the dark horizon.

“The tender was found abandoned.”

Daniel’s relief disappeared.

“Where?”

“Near Catalina.”

Another officer handed Daniel a waterproof bag recovered from the yacht.

Inside was a file.

HARRISON WHITMORE — FINAL STATEMENT.

Daniel stared.

His father’s confession.

On the last page, written beneath Harrison’s signature, was another sentence.

If anything happens to me, the person responsible is my brother Malcolm.

Daniel looked toward the black ocean.

Malcolm had lost the company.

Lost Vanessa.

Lost Victor.

But he was still free.

And according to the Coast Guard, the abandoned tender contained fresh blood.

Along with one handwritten note.

Daniel opened it.

The message contained only seven words.
