Chapter 7 - THE CRACKING FACADE

The interrogation viewing room was dark, illuminated only by the twin monitors displaying Eleanor Vance sitting alone in Interview Room B.
She looked exhausted, but her posture remained militarily rigid. Her beige cashmere shawl was draped across the back of the metal chair, and her manicured hands were folded neatly on the laminate table. She had refused water, refused coffee, and refused to answer any questions from the junior detective assigned to sit with her.
"She’s been sitting like that for two hours," Detective Miller said, leaning over the console as he slotted my flash drive into the system workstation. "Keeps repeating that her attorney will have our badges if we don't release her before morning roll call."
"Watch this first," I said, pointing to the monitor.
Miller clicked the video file. The high-definition footage expanded across the primary display. The hallway scene played out with agonizing clarity: Eleanor stalking out of the nursery with the shears, the gleaming metal catching the light, her chilling ultimatum echoing through the room's speakers: 'If you don't miscarry this bastard child, I will make sure David watches you bleed out on this floor.'
Detective Miller let out a low whistle, shaking his head. "Jesus Christ. That’s attempted aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and terroristic threats. That’s not a domestic misdemeanor. That’s a class-two felony."
"And that’s not all," I said, pulling the Swiss bank statements from my jacket pocket. "She tried to claim Hannah was embezzling from our accounts. In reality, my mother and brother have been running an illegal real estate Ponzi scheme using my late father’s estate. These transfers were authorized by my father’s contingency executor to uncover their fraud."
Miller looked at the paperwork, then tapped the microphone on the console. "Sergeant, bring Julian Vance into Interview Room A. Tell him if he leaves the lobby, I’m putting out an APB for witness tampering and obstruction of justice."
Miller turned back to me. "Stay here, Mr. Vance. Watch how a master manipulator handles reality when the mirror breaks."
Miller pushed through the door and walked into Interview Room B.
On the screen, Eleanor didn't flinch when the heavy door banged shut. She simply raised her eyebrows in mild disdain.
"Detective," she said, her voice smooth and patronizing. "I assume you are here to apologize and return my personal effects? My cousin Julian is outside. He will be filing a formal complaint regarding my unlawful detention."
Miller didn't sit down. He tossed a manila folder onto the metal table, right in front of her folded hands. Inside was a single high-resolution still frame: Eleanor holding the shears, mid-stride, her face contorted in vicious rage.
Eleanor looked down.
For three full seconds, the room was so silent on the audio feed that I could hear the fluorescent ballast hum.
Her shoulders didn't move. Her expression didn't change. But her fingers slowly uncurled, her nails digging into the soft flesh of her palms.
"Where did you get this?" she whispered.
"Your son’s cloud security hub," Miller replied casually, leaning against the doorframe. "Full 4K video. Crystal-clear audio. We have your threat on tape, Mrs. Vance. We have you threatening to murder your daughter-in-law and your unborn grandchild. The DA’s night-duty prosecutor just reviewed it. Bail is off the table. You’re being transferred to the county detention facility at 6:00 AM."
Eleanor’s head snapped up. The aristocratic calm was gone, replaced by a raw, feral panic. "That’s taken out of context! That girl attacked me! She’s mentally ill!"
"We have the ten minutes before and the ten minutes after, Eleanor," Miller said, dropping the formal honorific completely. "You brought shears into that room. You threatened her life. And outside in the lobby, your cousin Julian and your brother-in-law Greg just attempted to blackmail David with an edited clip. That adds felony extortion, conspiracy, and subornation of perjury to your sheet."
"No..." Eleanor’s voice rose, cracking with hysterical rage. "No! Julian wouldn't do that! He knows the law!"
"Julian is currently in Interview Room A, cutting a proffer deal to save his own license," Miller lied smoothly, utilizing standard interrogation pressure. "He’s telling us everything about the real estate loans, the forged signatures on David's credit, and the threats against Hannah."
The mention of the loans broke her.
Eleanor stood up so violently her chair screeched backward and crashed into the wall. "That ungrateful little bastard!" she screamed, her face turning crimson, saliva spraying from her lips. "I built this family! I gave David everything! He was nothing without my guidance! He married a gutter rat who looked through my books, who dared to question how I managed my husband's legacy! She deserved to swallow those bones! She deserved to bleed out under that table!"
In the observation room, my stomach turned violently.
The confession was captured on three separate departmental microphones.
Detective Miller didn't say another word. He simply signaled to the two female transport officers waiting in the hall. They stepped inside with heavy belly chains and leg irons.
As Eleanor was forced to turn around, her eyes locked directly onto the two-way mirror of the observation room. She knew I was behind that glass. She knew I was watching her world burn.

"David!" she shrieked, her voice echoing through the speaker system like a dying animal. "David, you listen to me! You are my son! You will rot in hell for this! You hear me? You are nothing without me! Nothing!"
I turned my back to the mirror, closed my eyes, and walked out into the cold corridor.
