Chapter 6 - MIDNIGHT ARRAIGNMENT

The municipal police station was lit with the harsh, humming glow of industrial fluorescent tubes. The linoleum floor squeaked beneath my shoes as I walked through the double glass doors at precisely 4:20 AM.

Sitting on the wooden benches in the lobby were Uncle Greg and Aunt Clara. Beside them sat a man in a tailored charcoal suit carrying a leather briefcase—Julian Vance, my father’s second cousin and the family’s longtime corporate fixer and criminal defense attorney.

When Julian saw me enter, he stood up, smoothing his lapels, an insincere smile spreading across his face.

"David," Julian said, extending a hand that I pointedly ignored. "Thank God you came to your senses. We were about to have a very messy, very public tragedy on our hands. Your mother has been through enough tonight."

"Where is the person who sent that text?" I asked, looking straight at Uncle Greg.

Greg looked away, unable to meet my eyes, staring intently at the scuffed floorboards. Aunt Clara sniffled, dabbing her nose with an embroidered handkerchief.

"Let’s not get bogged down in administrative squabbles," Julian said smoothly, lowering his voice to a confidential murmur. "The family is willing to overlook Hannah’s... emotional instability. We understand that pregnancy hormones can cause irrational behavior. We have drafted a mutual non-disclosure agreement and a voluntary stipulation of temporary custody for the newborn, granting Eleanor guardianship for the first six months while Hannah completes psychiatric evaluation. You sign, Eleanor walks out those doors, and that unfortunate video from the nursery never sees the light of day."

"You're blackmailing me with fabricated evidence to steal my child," I said, making sure my voice carried across the lobby toward the front intake desk where a desk sergeant was reviewing booking logs.

"We are protecting the Vance lineage, David," Julian replied, his voice dropping into a razor-thin threat. "Look at the realities. Your mother has friends in the judiciary. The video we have shows your wife committing aggravated battery on an elderly woman. By 8:00 AM, that clip will be on every morning broadcast in the state. Hannah will be arrested in her hospital bed. Do you really think Child Protective Services will let a violent, indicted felon keep an infant?"

"Are you done?" I asked.

Julian frowned, taken aback by my lack of panic. "David, you have ten minutes before I send the file to our media contacts."

"Send it," I said.

Julian blinked. "What?"

"I said send it, Julian. Put it on the news. Send it to the DA. Tweet it out to the world. Please."

Aunt Clara gasped. Uncle Greg finally looked up, his eyes wide with disbelief. "David, are you insane? It will destroy Hannah!"

"It will destroy someone," I said, pulling a high-speed USB flash drive from my pocket and holding it up between my fingers. "Because on this drive is the uncut, wide-angle 4K security footage from our hallway cloud hub. It includes the four minutes before your five-second edit, and the ten minutes after."

Julian’s face stiffened. The professional polish vanished in an instant. "What cloud hub? Eleanor said your house only had standard door sensors."

"Eleanor is an arrogant narcissist who thinks everyone else is as technologically illiterate as she is," I spat. "The video shows my mother holding ten-inch shears, threatening to murder my unborn child, and physically attacking Hannah before Hannah pushed her away in clear self-defense. It also captures the audio of Eleanor explicitly outlining how she planned to fake a fall to frame Hannah."

Julian’s mouth opened slightly, then closed. He turned his head sharply toward Uncle Greg. "Did she tell you about shears?"

Greg swallowed hard, his face turning pale green. "She... she said she was just holding some craft tools..."

"Shut up, Greg!" Julian hissed, his legal instincts kicking into overdrive. He looked back at me, his eyes calculating furiously. "David... let’s not be hasty. If that video exists, it complicates things. We can reach an internal compromise—"

"There is no compromise," I said, stepping past him toward the heavy security door leading to the detective bureau. "Detective Miller!" I called out to the lead investigator who had just stepped into the secure vestibule holding a paper cup of coffee.

"Mr. Vance?" Miller looked up, surprised to see me.

"I have the forensic evidence that corroborates Hannah Vance’s statement," I said loudly, holding the flash drive in the air so everyone in the lobby could hear. "Including continuous audio and video of Eleanor Vance committing premeditated assault with a deadly weapon, and proof of an active extortion attempt by her legal counsel and family members sitting in this lobby."

Detective Miller’s eyes darted from me to Julian Vance, whose briefcase was suddenly trembling against his thigh.

"Step inside, Mr. Vance," Detective Miller said, buzzing the magnetic lock on the security door. "Let's put this on the big screen."
