Chapter 10 - MERCY HAS A PRICE

Damon stopped breathing.
Mateo's gun touched Selena's temple.
The signed documents lay useless across the table.
For years, Damon Reyes had believed power meant controlling what happened next.
Tonight had taught him otherwise.
Sometimes power meant standing still while another man held everything you cared about beneath his finger.
Mateo's face had lost its elegance.
Desperation showed now.
“You sign.”
Damon looked at the documents.
“No.”
Selena's eyes widened.
Mateo pressed the gun harder.
“She dies.”
“No.”
Damon's voice did not change.
Selena stared at him.
Mateo laughed.
“You think I won't?”
“I know you will.”
That answer confused him.
Damon continued.
“But killing Selena doesn't fix your problem.”
“It removes one.”
“No.”
Damon took one slow step.
Mateo tightened his grip.
“Stop.”
Damon stopped.
“Ruby inherits.”
Mateo's jaw clenched.
“If Selena dies, Ruby still inherits.”
Silence.
“If I die, another estate protector will be appointed.”
Mateo knew.
Damon saw it.
“You cannot shoot your way out of paperwork.”
For the first time all night, Marcus almost smiled.
Mateo did not.
“You think this is funny?”
“No.”
Damon looked at Selena.
“Nothing about tonight is funny.”
Then he held up Javier's second flash drive.
“But this is useful.”
Mateo went still.
Lucia's eyes sharpened.
Damon continued.
“Rafael's recording.”
Mateo's composure finally cracked.
“There is no recording.”
“Then you don't mind if Agent Hale plays it.”
Hale stepped forward with a laptop.
Mateo shouted.
“Stop!”
There.
Proof without pressing play.
Damon saw Selena understand.
Mateo knew the recording existed.
Hale connected the drive.
Audio filled the room.
Rafael's voice.
Then Mateo's.
Older.
Younger.
But unmistakable.
Rafael: Isabel Reyes is inside.
Mateo: Then she shouldn't have come back.
Rafael: You said after midnight.
Mateo: Plans change.
Rafael: She's not part of this.
Mateo: Everyone is part of it once they can identify us.
The recording continued.
Damon felt Isabel's death reopen inside him.
He had imagined her final moments countless times.
Now he heard the man responsible speak about her as though she were an inconvenience.
Mateo's face went dead.
“Turn it off.”
Nobody moved.
Rafael's voice returned.
You kill that woman and Reyes will come for us.
Mateo laughed on the recording.
Then give him somebody to blame.
Damon closed his eyes.
Three years of hatred.
Three years of believing Rafael Delgato had murdered his sister.
Mateo had engineered the fire.
Then used Damon's grief to eliminate Rafael.
The recording continued.
Rafael: And Javier?
Mateo: If he knows too much, he goes too.
Selena gasped.
Damon opened his eyes.
Mateo lifted the gun away from Selena.
For one second, Damon thought he might surrender.
Instead Mateo turned the weapon toward himself.
Lucia stepped forward.
“Mateo.”
He laughed.
“Don't.”
“You don't get to leave like that.”
“Why not?”
“Because then you never answer for any of it.”
His hand trembled.
Lucia's voice softened.
“Rafael.”
Mateo's eyes flickered.
“You killed him as surely as Damon did.”
Damon felt the words.
They were true.
His hand had ordered Rafael's death.
But Mateo had built the lie.
Lucia continued.
“You killed Javier.”
Silence.
“You hunted a child.”
Mateo's face twisted.
“She would take everything.”
“She is three.”
“She is Rafael's heir.”
“She likes purple dragons.”
Mateo stared at her.
Lucia's eyes filled.
“She doesn't know what shares are. She doesn't know what your empire is. She wanted her stuffed rabbit.”
Selena began crying quietly.
Mateo looked at Damon.
“What happens if I surrender?”
Hale answered.
“You face federal charges.”
“Prison.”
“Yes.”
“For life.”
“Possibly.”
Mateo laughed bitterly.
Damon knew what he was asking.
Not legally.
Personally.
“What happens if I surrender to you, Damon?”
The room froze.
The question belonged to another world.
Their world.
The one where betrayal ended in blood.
Damon looked at Mateo.
Then at Gabriel.
Gabriel had betrayed him.
Yet Gabriel stood alive.
At Lucia.
She betrayed Damon, then Mateo.
Still alive.
At Marco's empty place in the room.
Marco was in surgery, fighting for his life after turning against Mateo at the last moment.
Damon understood what the night had been trying to teach him.
Mercy without consequence was weakness.
But consequence did not have to mean death.
“You surrender,” Damon said, “and I don't touch you.”
Mateo stared.
“You swear?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Damon looked at Selena.
“Because Ruby is going to grow up.”
Selena's eyes filled.
“And one day she might ask what kind of man I was when I had the chance to become exactly like you.”
Mateo's face tightened.
Damon continued.
“I'd like to have a better answer.”
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Mateo slowly lowered the weapon.
Hale stepped forward.
“Put it on the table.”
Mateo obeyed.
Agents entered.
Handcuffs closed around his wrists.
Lucia closed her eyes.
It was over.
Almost.
Damon turned toward Selena.
She stood so quickly the chair fell.
Then she crossed the room and wrapped her arms around him.
Damon froze.
He had been hugged by Ruby.
Not by Selena.
Not like this.
She buried her face against his chest.
“You came.”
“I promised.”
Her shoulders shook.
Damon lifted his arms carefully.
Then held her.
No strategy.
No calculation.
Just held her.
Gabriel looked away.
Marcus did too.
Even Hale gave them the dignity of pretending not to see.
Selena finally pulled back.
“Ruby.”
“Waiting.”
They left the building.
Outside, dawn had begun lightening the eastern sky.
Ruby was asleep inside an armored vehicle with Bunny under her chin.
Damon opened the door.
Her eyes fluttered.
She saw Selena.
“Mommy!”
Selena climbed in.
Ruby launched herself into her arms.
Both began crying.
Damon stood outside.
Watching.
Something in his chest loosened.
Gabriel approached.
Noah stood several yards behind him.
Alive.
Safe.
Gabriel looked at Damon.
“I know what's next.”
Damon looked at him.
“Do you?”
“You said betrayal has a price.”
“It does.”
Gabriel nodded.
“I'm ready.”
Damon studied him.
Nine years.
Six weeks of betrayal.
One warning that saved a mother and child.
One decision that saved Damon in the warehouse.
One terrified father who had been manipulated into becoming exactly what he hated.
Damon reached into his coat.
Gabriel's face tightened.
He expected a gun.
Instead Damon handed him a folded piece of paper.
Gabriel opened it.
A resignation agreement.
No severance.
No access to Reyes operations.
Permanent ban from criminal business tied to Damon.
And a protected trust for Noah that Gabriel could not touch.
Gabriel stared.
“What is this?”
“Your punishment.”
Gabriel looked stunned.
“You're letting me live?”
“No.”
Damon's gaze hardened.
“I'm making you.”
Gabriel's mouth opened.
Damon continued.
“You spend the rest of your life explaining to your son why fear made you betray people who trusted you.”
Gabriel's eyes filled.
“You raise him.”
Silence.
“You earn back whatever part of yourself you sold.”
Gabriel could not speak.
Damon stepped closer.
“Don't confuse mercy with forgetting.”
“I won't.”
“You come near my business again, we have a different conversation.”
Gabriel nodded.
Then he surprised Damon.
“Thank you.”
Damon looked toward Noah.
“Thank him.”
Gabriel turned.
His son waited.
Damon walked toward Selena and Ruby.
Then Marcus's phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed.
“Damon.”
Damon turned.
“What?”
“Hospital.”
Damon already knew.
“Marco?”
Marcus nodded.
“He survived surgery.”
Damon breathed out.
Then Marcus continued.
“But he woke up.”
“That sounds like good news.”
Marcus's face said otherwise.
“He asked for you.”
“Why?”
Marcus lowered the phone.
“Because Mateo wasn't the last person behind the Delgato operation.”
Damon stared.
“What did he say?”
Marcus swallowed.
“He said Arturo Delgato is alive.”
Lucia, standing nearby, went white.
“No.”
Marcus looked at her.
“Marco says he saw him six months ago.”
Damon felt the night rise again.
Mateo had been arrested.
The drive recovered.
Ruby safe.
Selena alive.
And yet the dead patriarch of the Delgato family might still be moving pieces from the shadows.
Lucia whispered:
“My father died eight years ago.”
Damon looked toward the sunrise.
Then back at her.
“Apparently not.”
And across the city, an elderly man in a white suit watched Mateo's arrest on television.
He switched off the screen.
Then looked at a photograph of Ruby Castillo.
“Rafael's daughter,” Arturo Delgato whispered.
May you like
He picked up the phone.
“Prepare the plane.”
