Chapter 1 - THE LAUGHTER ON THE PIER

Seventy-one-year-old Evelyn Hale had spent years telling her family that she could not swim.
Her fear of water was not something she found amusing. Eight years earlier, her husband, Thomas, had died in an accident on that same lake, and since then, even standing too close to deep water made her chest tighten.
Her nineteen-year-old grandson Connor knew that.
So did his older brother Blake.
So did Evelyn’s son Richard and his wife, Denise.
That afternoon, the family gathered at Evelyn’s lakeside estate for what was supposed to be a relaxing weekend. Connor joked that his grandmother should finally learn to swim. Evelyn told him to stop.
Instead, he shoved her from behind.
Evelyn fell into the cold lake fully dressed.
She panicked immediately.
She surfaced gasping, begged for help, slipped from the pier, and disappeared beneath the water more than once.
Nobody helped her.
Denise recorded everything on her phone while laughing.
Blake shouted jokes.
Richard, Evelyn’s only son, watched his mother struggling and calmly told the others she was being dramatic because she wanted attention.
Eventually Evelyn managed to drag herself onto the pier.
She lay there shaking, soaked and breathless, while her family waited for the frightened old woman they expected to see.
But when Evelyn finally stood, something had changed.
There were no tears.
No pleading.
No screaming.
She looked from Connor to Blake, then to Denise, and finally at Richard.
Then Evelyn reached beneath her wet blouse, closed her fingers around the small waterproof emergency pendant hanging against her chest, and pressed the button.
A red light began blinking.
Richard’s smile disappeared.
Evelyn looked directly at Denise’s phone.
“Keep recording,” she said quietly.

Her voice no longer trembled.
“The police are going to want the ending.”
