Chapter 1 - THE FOUNTAIN

For thirty-two years, Clara Hart had been treated as the inconvenient older daughter in a family obsessed with appearances.
At her younger sister Sophie’s lavish wedding, Clara arrived alone, wearing a pale green dress and expecting nothing more than the usual whispers.
Instead, her father, Graham Hart, took the microphone in front of four hundred guests and publicly mocked her.
“There’s Clara,” he announced. “All by herself. Couldn’t even find a date for her sister’s big day.”
The guests laughed.
When Clara retreated to the terrace to escape the humiliation, Graham followed. Irritated that she was “ruining the aesthetic,” he shoved her beside the fountain.
Clara lost her balance and fell backward into the freezing water.
Instead of helping her, the guests applauded.
Something inside Clara finally broke free.
She climbed from the fountain, looked her father directly in the eye, and quietly warned him to remember what he had done.
Then she changed into a black cocktail dress, painted her lips red, and sent two words to a contact her family knew nothing about.
Come now.
For years, the Harts had called Clara lonely.

What none of them knew was that Clara had been married for three years.
And her husband was already on his way.
