Chapter 1 - THE INJURY THEY COULDN’T EXPLAIN AWAY
Seventeen-year-old Wren Mercer had spent years being treated as the problem in her own family while her older brother, Kellan, remained the untouchable golden son. Every insult, threat, and bruise was dismissed as Wren being dramatic, while her parents, Graham and Nadine, protected Kellan’s reputation and promising future at any cost.
During a family weekend at their Colorado lake house, Kellan’s harassment escalated. After confronting Wren upstairs about whether she planned to expose him for stealing money from Aunt Ramona, Kellan shoved her from the top of the staircase.
Wren crashed to the floor and immediately lost sensation in both legs.
Instead of helping, her father ordered her to “walk it off,” while Kellan claimed she had thrown herself down the stairs for attention. Wren’s mother urged everyone not to ruin the weekend.
Aunt Ramona finally called 911 against Graham’s orders.
At the hospital, doctors discovered that Wren’s spinal cord had escaped permanent destruction, but the MRI revealed something far more disturbing: an older untreated vertebral fracture.
Wren knew exactly when it had happened.
Seven months earlier, Kellan had shoved her into a bathtub after she caught him stealing money. Her parents had refused medical care because they feared an investigation might cost Kellan his scholarship.
