Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN WHO FELL IN COURT

My name is Rachel Whitaker, and the morning my life changed, almost everyone in Courtroom 4B believed I was a liar.

My husband, Daniel Whitaker, had spent months telling people I was unstable.

His mother, Patricia, supported every word.

According to them, I exaggerated headaches, invented dizziness, staged blackouts, and used every hospital visit as a weapon whenever Daniel refused to give me what I wanted.

The story had been repeated so often that even I could see it settling into the faces around me.

The judge was frustrated.

Daniel's attorney was confident.

And I was alone.

My lawyer had withdrawn after Daniel drained our joint checking account and stopped paying the legal bills I thought we had agreed to cover.

The custody hearing was supposed to decide where our seven-year-old daughter, Lily, would live.

I tried to explain that Lily cried before every visit with Daniel.

I tried to explain that something was wrong.

Nobody seemed interested.

Then the courtroom began spinning.

I told Judge Richard Hanley I needed a moment.

Daniel laughed.

Patricia pointed at me.

"She's faking it."

My legs collapsed beneath me.

I struck the floor hard.

And that should have been the moment Daniel ran toward me.

He didn't.

A stranger did.

Colonel Aaron Carter of the U.S. Army Medical Corps had been sitting in the rear of the courtroom waiting for another proceeding. He checked my pulse, examined my eyes, and immediately realized something was dangerously wrong.

Daniel told him I did this all the time.

Patricia called it drama.

Colonel Carter ignored both of them.

"Call 911."

Nobody moved quickly enough.

His voice suddenly shook the courtroom.

"CALL 911!"

Judge Hanley rose from the bench.

And for the first time that morning, Daniel Whitaker stopped smiling.
