Chapter 1 - THE CALL THAT BROUGHT ME HOME

I was five thousand miles from Virginia when a nurse called and told me my wife, Jessi, had been rushed into emergency surgery with both legs shattered and severe trauma to her head.
Before I could understand what had happened, Flynn Sterling took the nurse’s phone.
Flynn was the arrogant son of Sheriff Arthur Sterling, the man who had controlled Harrington County for more than two decades.
“Come do something about it, soldier,” Flynn whispered. “My father owns the police.”
Fourteen hours later, I landed in Virginia.
Two sheriff’s cruisers were waiting outside the terminal.
Instead of taking me to my wife, they brought me directly to Sheriff Sterling, who presented an incident report claiming Jessi had trespassed onto Flynn’s construction site, threatened workers, and accidentally fallen down an unfinished stairwell.
I knew immediately that the report was fabricated.
But I didn’t argue.
I didn’t threaten him.
And I didn’t tell him who I really was.
At County Memorial Hospital, I finally found Jessi beneath white blankets, her broken legs held inside steel fixation frames.
When she opened her swollen eyes, she grabbed my hand.
“Luca,” she whispered. “They didn’t get the recordings.”
“What recordings?”
“Flynn was stealing public land.”
Then everything changed.
Because Flynn Sterling had not merely assaulted the wife of a deployed soldier.
He had attacked the primary witness in an investigation involving stolen public property, federal construction money, fraudulent contracts, and millions of dollars.
And Sheriff Arthur Sterling still believed I was just another frightened soldier he could intimidate.
He had no idea I was Special Agent Luca Vance, assigned to an Army criminal investigation task force working with federal authorities.
He also had no idea that his son had just given us the one thing our investigation had been missing.
