Chapter 1 - THE PHONE THEY FORGOT
For months, twenty-nine-year-old Elena Mercer endured a horrifying morning ritual inside the rundown Texas rental she shared with her husband, Caleb Mercer, his mother, Lorraine, and Elena’s two young daughters, six-year-old Sophie and four-year-old Mia.
Caleb blamed Elena for giving birth to girls. Lorraine encouraged him, insisting Elena was a “broken wife” who had failed their family even after coming to America and building a life with them.
Every morning before sunrise, Caleb dragged Elena into the backyard, restrained her against the porch pillar, and terrorized her while Lorraine stood nearby and encouraged him.
What neither of them knew was that Elena had found an old cracked phone in a kitchen drawer.
She hid it inside her pillow and recorded everything.
Footsteps.
Threats.
Caleb’s insults.
Lorraine’s instructions.
Their plans to frighten Elena into silence.
When Elena became pregnant again, the abuse escalated. Caleb and Lorraine were convinced she was carrying another daughter.
On the final morning, Elena collapsed.
At the county hospital, doctors delivered the devastating truth: the baby had been a boy, but the injuries Elena suffered had been too severe for him to survive.
In the hallway, Caleb and Lorraine claimed Elena had fallen in the backyard.
They even laughed, convinced no one would believe her.
But Elena still had the cracked phone.
While lying beneath a hospital blanket, grieving the son she had just lost, she called police and gave the dispatcher one sentence that changed everything.
“I have months of audio.”
