Chapter 9 - THE SON NOBODY KNEW EXISTED

Adriana's gun shook so badly Rafe could see the barrel moving from six feet away.
He did not reach for his own weapon.
Neither did Nico.
Mave stood very still.
“What son?” Rafe asked.
Adriana's face twisted.
“I was seventeen.”
Rafe understood before she finished.
“Harlan?”
She nodded.
The room became unbearably quiet.
“Vane?”
“He worked security around Vittorio before he joined the police task force. He knew exactly which girls to charm and which secrets to keep.”
Rafe felt sick.
His biological father had not simply poisoned Sofia's life.
He had moved through the women around Vittorio like a predator.
“What happened to the baby?”
“I gave birth in secret.”
Adriana's gun lowered an inch.
“Vittorio arranged an adoption. Harlan found out.”
“Who is he?”
“Martin.”
Rafe stared.
“Keene?”
Adriana nodded, sobbing.
“Martin Keene is my son.”
The betrayal at the shipyard changed shape.
Martin had worked beside Rafe for eight years.
Had driven Lucia.
Shared meals.
Protected doors.
And all along, Vane had known exactly who he was.
“Does Martin know?”
“Not everything.”
“What did Vane tell him?”
“That Vittorio stole him from me. That the Colazos ruined his life.”
“And you?”
“I tried to tell Martin the truth six months ago.”
She looked toward the floor.
“Harlan threatened to kill him.”
Nico said quietly, “Martin helped kidnap Lucia.”
“I know.”
“He could have killed her.”
“I know!”
Adriana's cry echoed through the archive.
“I know what he's done!”
Mave looked at Rafe.
This was the choice Vane kept forcing.
Punishment or family.
Rafe stepped forward.
Adriana raised the gun again.
“Don't.”
“You aren't going to shoot me.”
“You don't know that.”
“I do.”
“Why?”
“Because you could've done it when I opened the box.”
Adriana's face collapsed.
“You're wasting time.”
Rafe moved closer.
“Harlan has Finn.”
“I know.”
“He has my mother.”
“I know.”
“And you think giving him the evidence saves Martin?”
Adriana looked away.
“No.”
“Then help me.”
She began crying harder.
“I already gave him everything.”
Rafe froze.
“What?”
“The old addresses. Sofia's habits. Lucia's school information.”
Lucia.
Rage surged.
Rafe closed the distance.
Adriana flinched.
Mave touched his arm.
Just once.
Rafe stopped.
Adriana saw it.
So did Nico.
Mave didn't say anything.
She didn't need to.
Rafe breathed.
Then asked, “Where is Vane?”
“I don't know.”
“Pier Nineteen?”
“It's another trap.”
“Where will Finn be?”
“I don't know.”
Rafe's restraint fractured.
“You expect me to believe that?”
“Yes!”
Adriana reached inside her coat.
Nico's weapon came up instantly.
“Slow.”
She pulled out a small phone.
“Harlan sent this an hour ago.”
A video.
Finn sat inside a room with green-painted walls.
He looked pale but conscious.
A portable monitor sat beside him.
Sofia sat in another chair.
Alive.
Their captors had put them together.
Mave reached for the screen.
“Finn.”
At the edge of the video, a train horn sounded.
Then a bell.
Nico replayed it.
“Location clue?”
Rafe listened.
Train horn.
Bell.
A low mechanical rumble.
Mave stared at the green wall behind Finn.
Then something clicked.
“Finn knows where he is.”
Everyone looked at her.
“What?”
“The bear.”
Finn still had Blue.
It rested in his lap.
His fingers were positioned strangely against the bear's fur.
Mave leaned closer.
“He's tapping.”
Nico increased volume.
Faint rhythmic sounds.
Tap.
Tap-tap.
Pause.
Finn had spent six months obsessed with Morse code after a school project.
Mave whispered letters aloud.
“E…”
Pause.
“A…”
Another.
“S…”
“T.”
“East,” Rafe said.
Finn repeated.
Then another word.
“B…”
“O…”
“S…”
“East Boston.”
Nico looked at Adriana.
“You said Pier Nineteen was a trap.”
“It is.”
“Then where in East Boston?”
They listened again.
Finn changed rhythm.
“B.”
“E.”
“L.”
“L.”
Bell.
Mave looked up.
“The bell.”
Rafe remembered an abandoned Catholic school near the freight yards.
St. Bellarmine's.
Its old chapel had a bell tower.
“St. Bellarmine.”
Nico was already pulling maps.
“Closed fourteen years ago.”
“Distance from rail line?”
“One block.”
Rafe took Adriana's gun.
“Let's go.”
She stared.
“You're taking me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Martin may be there.”
“He betrayed you.”
“Yes.”
“And?”
Rafe looked at her.
“And he's still your son.”
Mave watched something change in Adriana's face.
Maybe hope.
Maybe shame.
Maybe both.
They contacted federal agents before leaving.
Rafe sent copies of everything in Box 317 to three separate locations.
Nico hated the idea.
Rafe insisted.
“If we die, Vane still loses.”
At 2:17 p.m., they reached the abandoned school.
No sirens.
No marked vehicles.
Federal teams staged two blocks away.
Rafe, Nico, Mave, and Adriana entered through the old gymnasium.
Mave whispered, “You realize I am wildly underqualified for this.”
Rafe looked at her sling.
“You've done better than most professionals.”
“That says terrible things about your professionals.”
Nico muttered, “Starting to take that personally.”
They moved through the building.
Dust.
Broken desks.
Peeling paint.
Then voices.
Rafe recognized Vane.
He motioned everyone down.
Through a cracked classroom door, they could see Finn and Sofia.
Sofia's silver hair hung loose around her face.
Finn clutched Blue.
Martin stood nearby.
Gun lowered.
Vane paced.
“You should've brought Rafael here already,” he snapped.
Martin looked sick.
“You said nobody got hurt.”
Vane laughed.
“You kidnapped a child after heart surgery.”
“You ordered it.”
“And you obeyed.”
Martin's face twisted.
Adriana covered her mouth.
Rafe watched her son.
Vane continued.
“That's the difference between us, Martin. I know what I am.”
“You told me Vittorio stole me.”
“He did.”
“He arranged my adoption because my mother was seventeen.”
Vane went still.
Martin's eyes filled.
“I found the records.”
Adriana almost gasped.
Martin continued.
“You lied.”
Vane's expression changed.
Cold.
“Careful.”
“You used me.”
“Yes.”
The honesty stunned everyone.
Vane stepped closer.
“You spent your whole life desperate to belong somewhere. Men like you are easy.”
Martin raised the gun.
“Let them go.”
Vane smiled.
“No.”
Martin's hand shook.
“You're not my father.”
“No.”
Vane's smile widened.
“And thank God for that.”
He drew his gun.
Rafe moved.
“Now!”
The door burst open.
Chaos erupted.
Nico tackled one guard.
Adriana screamed Martin's name.
Mave ran toward Finn.
Rafe went for Vane.
Shots exploded.
Glass shattered.
Finn ducked beneath his chair.
Sofia kicked a guard's knee.
Mave reached her brother.
“I've got you.”
“Mave!”
She pulled him behind a desk.
Rafe slammed Vane into a wall.
The older man struck back harder than expected.
A gun skittered away.
They crashed through broken furniture.
Vane smiled through blood.
“You fight like me.”
Rafe hit him again.
“No.”
“You do.”
Another blow.
“You can pretend Vittorio made you.”
Vane grabbed Rafe by the throat.
“But I am inside you.”
Rafe drove him backward.
Vane laughed.
“Kill me.”
Rafe pinned him.
“Come on.”
Vane's eyes shone.
“Prove me right.”
Rafe's fist lifted.
Twenty years of rage sat inside it.
Vittorio.
Gabriel.
Sofia.
Lucia.
Finn.
Mave.
He could end Harlan Vane with three strikes.
Maybe two.
Then Mave shouted,
“Rafe!”
He looked toward her.
She wasn't telling him not to kill Vane.
She was holding Finn.
Alive.
That was the answer.
Rafe lowered his fist.
Vane's smile disappeared.
“No.”
Rafe stood.
“You don't get to decide who I become.”
Federal agents stormed the classroom.
Vane reached for the gun on the floor.
A shot rang out.
Everyone froze.
Vane looked down.
Blood spread across his shirt.
Behind him stood Martin.
Smoking weapon in hand.
Adriana screamed.
Martin stared at what he had done.
Then another shot fired from the corridor.
Martin jerked.
He collapsed.
“Martin!”
Adriana ran toward him.
Nico turned and fired toward the hidden shooter.
Footsteps fled.
Rafe looked at Vane.
Still alive.
Barely.
Agents rushed to him.
Mave was already beside Martin.
Blood poured from his side.
“Pressure!”
Adriana pressed both hands to the wound.
Martin looked up at her.
“Who are you?”
She broke.
“I'm your mother.”
His eyes widened.
For one terrible second, Rafe thought he would die without another word.
Then Martin whispered,
“I know.”
Adriana sobbed.
“How?”
“I found everything.”
“You knew?”
“For two weeks.”
“Why didn't you come to me?”
Martin coughed.
“Didn't know if you'd want me.”
Adriana bent over him.
“I have wanted you every day for twenty-seven years.”
Paramedics rushed in.
Mave turned toward Finn.
He looked exhausted.
But safe.
She held him with her uninjured arm.
Then a weak voice came from behind Rafe.
“Rafael.”
He turned.
Sofia stood ten feet away.
His mother.
Alive.
Three years older.
Twenty years guiltier.
Rafe stared.
She whispered,
“My son.”
Rafe's face hardened.
Mave watched him.
Sofia stepped closer.
“I can explain.”
Rafe's eyes filled.
“You watched me bury you.”
Sofia froze.
The same words Mave had used with Kathleen.
Rafe laughed bitterly.
“Apparently mothers in this family have a habit.”
Sofia began crying.
“I thought I was protecting you.”
“You don't get to decide if three years of grief was protection.”
“I know.”
“No. You don't.”
Rafe walked past her.
Mave followed him into the hallway.
“Rafe.”
He stopped.
She didn't touch him.
“You don't have to forgive her today.”
“I know.”
“You don't have to forgive her tomorrow.”
He looked at her.
“But?”
“But don't make a permanent decision from temporary pain.”
Rafe laughed weakly.
“You practicing fortune cookies again?”
“Occupational hazard.”
He looked back toward the classroom.
Sofia stood alone.
Then an agent came running down the hall.
“Mr. Colazo?”
Rafe turned.
“What?”
“We've got a problem.”
“What problem?”
“Harlan Vane was wearing a live audio transmitter.”
Rafe went cold.
“To who?”
“We don't know.”
The agent held up the device.
“But whoever was listening heard everything.”
Mave looked toward Finn.
Rafe looked toward his mother.
The federal agent continued.
“And Vane wasn't the person controlling the network.”
Rafe's eyes narrowed.
“How do you know?”
The agent raised a recovered phone.
“One message arrived after Vane was shot.”
On the screen were seven words.
