Chapter 1 - THE HUSBAND’S WIFE
Dr. Mara Bellamy stood behind the triage desk at Bellhaven Emergency Clinic on her seventh wedding anniversary, her hand resting on her stomach, her gold band glinting under fluorescent bulbs. For seven years, she had carried the title of wife with devoted grace. She had drained her savings to finance her husband Elias’s boutique law practice, washed his collared shirts after exhausting fourteen-hour shifts, and quietly absorbed the poisonous remarks of her mother-in-law, Evelyn, who never failed to lament Mara’s empty womb.
Mara had carried that heavy silence out of love. Three years earlier, Elias had sat on their matrimonial bed holding a clinical envelope, weeping as he confessed he was biologically infertile. Mara had cupped his face, promised no one would ever know, and accepted the family's harsh judgment as her own cross to bear.
All of that devotion disintegrated at 11:43 PM when Elias crashed through the clinic’s sliding glass doors, frantic and breathless, carrying a beautiful eight-month pregnant blonde woman and screaming for someone to save his wife.

When Elias coldly commanded Mara not to make an embarrassing scene, Mara looked him dead in the eye and delivered the quiet truth: he was the one who had brought the mistress, the child, and the betrayal right through her front door.
