Tessa, an exhausted twenty-seven-year-old server at an elite Chicago restaurant, worked endless double shifts to care for her younger deaf brother, Leo. Every Wednesday, she quietly studied American Sign Language to ensure Leo never felt isolated. Seeing her aloof nature, her spiteful manager Brett and mocking coworkers sent her into the private dining room to serve Salvatore Marquetti—Chicago’s most ruthless crime boss, known for terrifying politicians and ignoring staff. Expecting her public humiliation, Brett watched through the door's glass port. But when a loud dish crashed in the kitchen and Salvatore didn't flinch, Tessa realized the truth. Stepping directly into his field of view, she introduced herself using fluent ASL. Stunned that someone saw his deepest vulnerability, Salvatore smiled warmly and signed back. When he caught sight of Brett laughing through the window, Salvatore realized she was the butt of an orchestrated joke. Cold fury took over. He signaled his three armed enforcers into the room, signing to Tessa that those who mocked her were done. Brett’s face drained of color as the prank shattered in an instant.
