Chapter 1 - THE ANNIVERSARY MASSACRE

On her third wedding anniversary, Evelyn Lane bought her husband, Michael, the luxury Rolex he had begged for, cutting work early to surprise him at their Boston brownstone. Instead, she walked into their master bedroom to find Michael in bed with Rachel Hayes—her closest confidante of twenty-six years, her maid of honor, and the woman whose family Evelyn had bankrolled through tragedy. Michael did not stutter apologies; he lashed out in annoyance that her ruined schedule had interrupted his afternoon. A terrifying stillness settled into Evelyn’s bones. Walking back to the foyer, she gripped an aluminum baseball bat from a corporate softball league and returned. When Rachel whimpered about them being sisters, the silver metal swung. Evelyn shattered furniture, mirrors, family heirlooms, and Michael's kneecap when he tackled her to protect his mistress. When the rage subsided into dust and splinters, Evelyn dialed 911 herself, seated calmly on an overturned chest, watching them bleed and tremble until the sirens filled the avenue. Thirty-six months in Framingham State Prison followed, ending on a crisp March morning when she emerged into daylight to find a familiar, exhausted man standing across the asphalt holding a bouquet of yellow sunflowers: Lucas Hayes, Rachel's estranged older brother.
