Chapter 10 - Bloodline and Sanctuary

Spring came late to Chicago, but by early April, the ice on Lake Michigan had finally thawed into a brilliant, sparkling sapphire.
The master bedroom on the fourth floor of the Ferrante estate was filled with the soft morning light. Willow lay propped up against a mountain of down pillows, exhausted, her face pale but glowing with a profound, peaceful radiance.
In her arms lay a newborn boy, wrapped in a pale blue cashmere blanket. He had thick dark hair, bright curious eyes, and tiny pink fists that clutched at the air.
The heavy mahogany door clicked open softly.
Veto entered. He wore no tie, his shirt sleeves rolled up, looking tired from the thirty-six-hour labor he had refused to leave. In his hands, he carried a small silver rattle and a cup of warm tea for Willow.
Bruno trotted in behind him, resting his giant snout gently on the edge of the mattress, sniffing the newborn with gentle curiosity. The baby made a soft squeaking sound, and Bruno let out a satisfied snort, laying his massive head flat beside Willow’s hip.
Veto set the tea down and sat on the edge of the mattress. For a long time, the ruthless boss of the Syndicate simply watched the tiny rise and fall of the infant’s chest.
“He has your eyes,” Veto whispered, his fingers trembling slightly as he reached out and touched the baby’s tiny cheek.
“He has your calm,” Willow countered softly, smiling through her tears. “He didn't cry once after Dr. Ross handed him to me.”
She looked up at Veto, her gaze filled with an emotion that went far beyond gratitude or convenience.
“What will we name him?” she asked.
Veto looked down at the birth certificate lying on the bedside table. The father’s name was already printed in bold, legal ink: Veto Ferrante.
“Alexander,” Veto murmured. “Defender of men.”
Willow’s eyes brimmed with tears. “Alexander Ferrante. It sounds like someone who will never have to hide behind the trash cans.”
Veto leaned down and pressed a long, tender kiss against Willow’s forehead, then shifted down to place his lips softly against hers. The kiss was no longer about contracts, alliances, or survival. It was fierce, devoted, and undeniably real.

“No one in this family will ever hide again,” Veto swore against her lips.
