Chapter 1 - THE VOICE IN THE LOCKED PANTRY

Two years after eleven-year-old Lily Carter lost her mother, Catherine, to cancer, her father David married Vanessa, a seemingly warm woman who promised to help rebuild their broken family.
Vanessa and her sixteen-year-old daughter, Madison, moved into the Carter home outside Columbus, Ohio.
At first, everything seemed normal.
Then the cruelty began.
Only when David was gone.
Vanessa slapped Lily, forced her to clean up after Madison, mocked her grief, and taught her to lie whenever David noticed bruises or injuries. Madison usually supported her mother, laughing at Lily and repeating Vanessa’s lies.
One rainy Thursday, Madison deliberately wore a sweatshirt that had belonged to Lily’s dead mother. When Lily protested, Vanessa struck her across the face.
David came home moments later.
Terrified, Lily claimed she had fallen.
That night, Lily overheard Vanessa telling Madison that children quickly learned what happened when adults stopped believing them.
Then Lily heard an electronic sound coming from a narrow pantry that had remained locked since before Vanessa moved into the house.
Inside, Lily discovered an old phone playing a recorded video.
Her mother was on the screen.
Catherine looked frightened.
Someone stood behind her.
Then Catherine spoke Lily’s name.
