Chapter 1 - THE RING THAT SHOULD NOT HAVE EXISTED
At billionaire hotel owner Silas Arden’s annual charity gala for foster children, four-year-old orphan Wren Holloway was publicly accused of stealing an antique gold ring by wealthy foundation board member Lenora Voss.
Wren insisted the ring belonged to her.
“My mommy gave it to me.”
Unlike everyone else in the ballroom, Silas believed the terrified child deserved to be heard.
When he examined the scratched wedding band hanging from a faded green ribbon around Wren’s neck, he discovered an inscription hidden inside:
For Elodie—when you’re ready to come home. G.M.
Silas immediately recognized the initials.
Gideon Merritt.
His late billionaire business partner and closest friend, who had died five years earlier supposedly without children.
Wren revealed that her mother’s name had been Elodie Holloway. She had died in a car accident three years earlier, leaving Wren alone and eventually in the care of St. Agnes Children’s Home.
The discovery became even more disturbing when Silas learned Elodie had lived near Gideon’s private Connecticut residence—a place Gideon often disappeared to without explanation.
Lenora, who had helped administer Gideon’s estate after his death, suddenly attempted to leave the gala.
Silas stopped her long enough to notice something important.
She was afraid.
Then Wren pulled a tiny brass key from a secret pocket sewn inside her dress. A star had been engraved into its head.
Silas recognized the symbol instantly.
For five years, he had carried Gideon’s antique pocket watch, which bore the exact same star. After Gideon’s death, Silas had discovered a mysterious handwritten message attached to it:
Do not break it open. The person who needs what’s inside already has the key.
When Silas showed Wren the watch, the little girl whispered that her mother once had a photograph of it.
Then she pointed toward Lenora.
“Mama said a bad lady would come looking for it someday.”
Lenora turned and ran.
