Chapter 5 - THE TRUTH EMMA WHITMORE LEFT BEHIND

“Richard.”

Sarah’s voice became cold.

“Where is Brooke?”

A quiet laugh came through the phone.

“You really do care about her.”

“She is a child.”

“So was I.”

Sarah froze.

“What?”

Richard continued.

“Everyone thinks this is about money.”

His voice changed.

“It was never about money.”

Sarah gripped the phone tighter.

“Then what is it about?”

A pause.

“Control.”

The call ended.

Sarah immediately turned to Nathan.

“He has her.”

Nathan’s face hardened.

“I know.”

Sarah stared.

“You know?”

Nathan was already grabbing his coat.

“I have known Richard longer than anyone.”

“Then why are you standing here?”

Nathan looked at her.

“Because if Richard took Brooke, he wants me to follow.”

“And?”

“And he prepared a trap.”

Sarah shook her head.

“She is five years old.”

Nathan’s expression broke.

“I know.”

For the first time, Sarah saw the billionaire not as a powerful businessman.

She saw a father.

A terrified father.

---

The police wanted Nathan to stay back.

He refused.

Sarah refused too.

Nobody understood why she was involved.

But she did.

Because Brooke trusted her.

And Sarah had made a promise without saying it.

She would not abandon that child.

The location came thirty minutes later.

An abandoned building outside the city.

The old Whitmore family factory.

Nathan immediately recognized it.

“Why here?”

Sarah looked at him.

“You know this place?”

Nathan nodded.

“My father built it.”

The words from the photograph came back.

HE KNOWS THE TRUTH.

They entered carefully.

Inside, everything was silent.

Too silent.

Then they heard something.

A child crying.

“Brooke!”

Sarah ran forward.

Nathan grabbed her arm.

“Wait.”

But Sarah had already heard enough.

She followed the sound.

They found Brooke sitting in a small room.

She was not tied up.

She was not hurt.

But she was terrified.

And standing beside her…

Was a woman.

A blonde woman.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Sarah stopped.

Because she knew immediately.

Emma Whitmore.

Brooke looked up.

“Mommy?”

The woman’s face collapsed.

She dropped to her knees.

“My baby.”

Brooke ran into her arms.

For two years, Sarah had imagined what this moment would look like.

Anger.

Questions.

Pain.

But instead…

There was only a child finally holding the person she missed.

Sarah looked at Nathan.

He looked like the entire world had stopped.

Then Emma stood.

Her eyes met his.

And neither spoke.

Because there were two years of pain between them.

Two years of unanswered questions.

Then Emma whispered:

“I tried to come home.”

Nathan’s voice broke.

“Why didn’t you?”

Emma looked toward Richard.

“Because he made sure I couldn’t.”

Everyone turned.

Richard stepped from the shadows.

Clapping slowly.

“Beautiful reunion.”

Sarah felt a chill.

Richard smiled.

“You always were dramatic, Emma.”

Nathan moved in front of his daughter.

“What did you do?”

Richard’s smile disappeared.

“The same thing I have always done.”

He looked around.

“Clean up your father’s mistakes.”

Emma’s face changed.

“What are you talking about?”

Richard laughed.

“You still don’t know.”

He looked at Nathan.

“Your father didn’t build this empire legally.”

Silence.

“He stole it.”

Nathan stared.

“That’s a lie.”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

He looked at Emma.

“She found the records.”

Sarah understood.

The hidden room.

The letter.

The secrets.

Emma had discovered the truth.

Richard continued.

“And she was going to expose everything.”

Nathan looked at Emma.

“Is that true?”

Emma’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was trying to protect you.”

A loud noise interrupted them.

The factory lights suddenly shut off.

Darkness.

Then Richard’s voice echoed.

“But now everyone knows.”

Sarah grabbed Brooke.

Nathan moved toward Emma.

And then they heard the sound of the factory doors locking.

Richard had trapped them inside.

May you like
