Chapter 6 - A DEADLY DANCE

Before Miller could utter another word, a single high-caliber bullet ripped through his skull from the darkness of the upper mezzanine, painting the wall behind him in red.
Victor instantly threw himself in front of me, raising his weapon toward the catwalk. But the shooter was already gone, disappearing into the shadows of the estate's ventilation network.
"Inside my own bed," Victor repeated the dead man's words, his knuckles whitening around his gun. His eyes turned toward the main house with a cold, terrifying realization.
Two hours later, the estate was secured by fifty additional Romano soldiers who had arrived from Brooklyn. The dead were removed, the blood on the limestone was scrubbed clean, and the wounded Marco was treated by Victor’s private underground surgeon.
In the grand study, Victor stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out at the rising dawn over the Hudson River.
I stood by the leather desk, nursing a bandaged scrape on my arm. "Miller said the call came from inside your house. He meant Clara."
Victor turned around slowly. His face was unreadable, a stone mask carved from grief and absolute fury. "Clara's father, Donald Whitmore, has been secretly negotiating with the Moreno cartel in Miami. If I die, Clara inherits forty percent of the Romano logistics empire through our prenuptial agreement. Donald takes the rest."
"Then why didn't you arrest her tonight?" I asked, my voice rising. "Why is she still sitting in the east wing drinking champagne while your men are dying in the garage?!"
Victor walked over to me, stopping only inches away. The intensity of his gaze was suffocating. "Because in my world, Miss Hart, you do not shoot a traitor until you have severed all their roots. If I kill Clara now, her father burns the ports, takes your mother off the hospital donor registry, and disappears into South America."
He reached into his pocket and placed a black velvet box on the desk. He opened it.
Inside sat a breathtaking diamond necklace, shimmering with cold brilliance under the study lights.
"Tonight is the Whitmore Charity Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art," Victor said softly. "Donald Whitmore will announce our formal wedding date to the press. Every mob boss, corrupt politician, and cartel leader on the East Coast will be there."
"And what does that have to do with me?" I asked, a sense of dread pooling in my stomach.
"Clara believes her hit squad succeeded in killing you tonight. She thinks you're dead in the garage," Victor whispered, his fingers brushing gently against the stray hairs near my ear. "Tonight, you don't wear a maid's apron, Lena. Tonight, you wear five-hundred-thousand dollars of silk, this diamond necklace, and you walk into that gala on my arm."
My breath hitched. "You want me to play your date?"
"I want you to be my queen," Victor said, his voice dropping into a husky, dangerous baritone that sent electricity racing down my spine. "I want Donald Whitmore and Clara to look at you and realize that their plot has failed. When Clara panics, she will make a mistake. She will contact her father's offshore handler. And that is when we crush them both."
"I am a maid, Victor," I said, my heart hammering against my ribs. "I don't know how to dance with billionaires. I don't know how to speak their language."
Victor stepped even closer, his strong hands gently resting on my waist. The heat of his touch seared through my clothes.
"You don't need to speak their language, Lena," he murmured, his dark eyes looking deep into my soul. "You knocked out the king of New York with a single punch. You set a strike team on fire with a cleaning machine. Those spoiled parasites in silk won't know what hit them."
For a long, breathless moment, we stood in the quiet study, the air thick with an unspoken, dangerous tension. Victor leaned in, his lips hovering a millimeter from mine, the scent of his cologne intoxicating my senses.

"Do we have a deal, Lena?" he whispered against my lips.
I swallowed hard, forcing my racing pulse to steady. "Save my family. Protect my brother. And I will dance with the devil himself."
