Chapter 1 - THE MAID WHO HELD THE SCALPEL

For nearly a year, everyone inside Rocco Marchetti’s mansion knew Arya Vance only as Annie—the silent maid who scrubbed marble floors, avoided eye contact, and accepted every insult without fighting back.
No one knew that three years earlier, she had been Dr. Arya Vance, one of the most gifted neonatal surgeons at Johns Hopkins.
Her career had ended after three infants died under suspicious circumstances during her shifts. Evidence appeared to point directly at her. Newspapers called her the “Angel of Death Surgeon.” Her medical license was revoked, her reputation destroyed, and every hospital door in America closed to her.
With her mother needing expensive dialysis, Arya disappeared into domestic work.
Then she entered the home of Rocco Marchetti.
Rocco was one of the most feared organized-crime figures on the East Coast, but inside his mansion he was simply the widowed father of baby Leo, the son he loved more than his empire.
Rocco’s glamorous fiancée, Vanessa, treated Arya like dirt.
One night, however, Leo suddenly stopped breathing.
Twelve highly trained private paramedics rushed into the nursery, but the infant’s throat had swollen completely shut. They could not intubate him. His oxygen level crashed. His heartbeat began disappearing.
When the lead paramedic attempted a dangerous emergency incision at the wrong location, Arya finally broke her silence.
She shoved him aside.
With Rocco’s gun pressed against her temple, Arya took the scalpel and performed an emergency surgical airway on the dying infant.
Leo breathed.
His heart began beating normally again.
And the maid everyone ignored suddenly became the most important person in the mansion.
But saving Leo created a new problem.
Rocco had seen her hands.
He knew no maid could perform that procedure.
After the ambulance carried Leo away, Rocco took Arya’s scarred hand and asked the question she had spent three years running from.
“Who are you?”
Arya insisted she was only Annie.
Rocco did not believe her.
He ordered his security chief, Bruno, to move her into the guest wing and guard the door.
“Am I a prisoner?” Arya demanded.
Rocco looked toward the disappearing ambulance carrying his son.

And before sunrise, Rocco Marchetti would discover that the woman who had just saved his child had once been accused of killing children exactly like him.
