Chapter 1 - THE LITTLE GIRL IN THE YELLOW DRESS

Ethan Caldwell had everything money could buy and almost nothing that made life worth living.
At forty-five, the billionaire founder of Caldwell Tech Industries controlled a global technology empire from a motorized wheelchair. Two years earlier, a mysterious car accident had shattered his spine, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down and even more suspicious of the people surrounding him.
His wife, Vanessa, remained beautiful, polished, and socially perfect. Their twelve-year-old son, Parker, had become quiet and withdrawn. Ethan trusted board members less than competitors and relatives less than lawyers.
During a lavish summer party at Ethan's twenty-acre Hamptons estate, politicians, investors, celebrities, and business executives filled the gardens surrounding the mansion's Olympic-sized pool.
While distracted by a conversation across the patio, Ethan leaned forward to retrieve a remote that had fallen from his lap.
His wheelchair suddenly shifted.
Before anyone noticed, Ethan toppled into the pool.
The heavy motorized chair dragged him toward the bottom.
Nearly one hundred guests continued drinking champagne, laughing, and making deals while the billionaire drowned only yards away.
But seven-year-old Hannah Thompson saw him.
Hannah was the daughter of Marie Thompson, one of the Caldwell family's housekeepers. School was closed for summer vacation, so Marie had reluctantly brought Hannah to work and ordered her to remain near the service entrance where guests would not notice her.
Hannah saw Ethan disappear beneath the water.
She dropped the pastry she had been eating, sprinted across the patio, and jumped into the deep end without hesitation.
At the bottom, she found Ethan trapped beneath his wheelchair.
She freed his arm, pulled him upward, and somehow managed to keep his face above water long enough to scream for help.
Only then did the party fall silent.
Guests stared in disbelief at the tiny girl in the soaked yellow dress struggling to keep one of America's richest men alive.
And as security finally rushed toward the pool, Vanessa Caldwell stood motionless beside the water.

For one strange second, she did not look frightened.
She looked disappointed.
