Chapter 1 - THE EMPTY CHAIR

The chair was empty.
That was the detail Mara Ellis would remember long after the diamonds, the expensive dinner, and the cruel laughter had faded.
Mara worked as a housemaid at the Bellucci estate, a sprawling home outside New York owned by Damian Bellucci, forty-four, quiet, intimidating, and powerful enough that politicians and businessmen chose their words carefully around him.
On a cold November night, Damian hosted an important private dinner.
Bank representatives.
Attorneys.
Board members.
Senior Bellucci Maritime executives.
And Damian’s elegant fiancée, Selene Vale.
Mara’s seven-year-old daughter, Lily, had been forced to come to work with her because a babysitter had canceled. Mara had given Lily strict instructions.
Stay in the staff kitchen.
Finish her homework.
Do not interrupt.
Do not enter the dining room.
Above all, do not make herself noticeable.
But dinner ran late.
The staff meal never arrived.
By nearly nine o’clock, Lily had eaten nothing except half an apple.
Then she appeared quietly in the dining room.
Her school braids were slightly crooked. Her navy dress was wrinkled from sitting in the staff kitchen. One black shoe carried a small scratch across the toe.
Mara immediately saw her.
So did everyone else.
Lily knew she had broken the rules. Embarrassment spread across her little face while wealthy strangers stared.
Then her stomach growled.
A few guests looked away.
Mara started toward her daughter.
But Damian Bellucci looked up first.
Lily saw the empty chair near the far end of the long table.
Nobody was sitting there.
Nobody had been assigned to it.
It was simply empty.
For one terrifying second, Mara expected Lily to return quietly to the kitchen.
Instead, the little girl gathered what courage she had left, looked directly at the most powerful man in the room, and asked:
“Mr. Bellucci?”
Damian put down his fork.
“Yes?”
Lily pointed toward the empty chair.
“Can I sit with you?”
Every conversation died.
Mara’s heart stopped.

Then Selene Vale laughed.
And everything that happened afterward began with the cruel sentence she said next.
