Chapter 3 - THE DEAD MAN’S VOICE

There are moments when fear stops feeling like fear.

It becomes clarity.

I remember reading those eight words and suddenly noticing everything.

The red emergency lights.

The blood on Alessandro’s cuff.

Emma’s warm body pressed against my legs.

The open seam beneath Mr. Bunny’s ear.

Vivian standing in the doorway with one hand over her mouth.

Carlo Moretti watching everyone except me.

My husband had been dead for two years.

And somebody inside Villa Moretti knew exactly who he was.

“Give me my daughter.”

Rosa had been holding Emma while I read the note.

I took her immediately.

Emma wrapped both arms around my neck.

“Mommy, I don’t like this house anymore.”

My throat closed.

“Neither do I.”

I looked at Alessandro.

“We’re leaving.”

“No.”

I stared at him.

“That wasn’t a request.”

“You leave this villa tonight, you may not survive the driveway.”

“I stayed here and someone just threatened to kill my child.”

“And the person who sent that threat knew precisely where you were.”

“That is your problem.”

His eyes darkened.

“It became my problem the moment they used my house to reach you.”

“No. It became mine when my husband died.”

For a second, nobody spoke.

Then Alessandro looked at his guards.

“Seal every gate. Nobody enters or leaves without my authorization.”

Vivian stepped forward.

“You cannot be serious.”

“I am.”

“My father’s driver is outside.”

“He can wait.”

“Alessandro—”

“Your phone.”

She stared at him.

“What?”

“Give Marco your phone.”

Vivian’s face turned white.

“You’re confiscating my phone?”

“I’m confiscating everyone’s.”

Carlo gave a dry laugh.

“Are you including me?”

“Yes.”

That silenced the room.

Carlo’s jaw hardened.

“I have served this family for thirty-six years.”

“Then you understand why.”

“What I understand is that you’re allowing panic to replace judgment.”

Alessandro stepped close to him.

“And what I understand is that someone disabled my cameras from inside my security system, killed one of my men, and left a threat against a three-year-old child.”

Carlo held his gaze.

“Which suggests the Bennett woman brought trouble into your home.”

“Or trouble was already here.”

For the first time, something openly cold passed between them.

Gianni interrupted.

“I have something.”

We all turned.

The laptop had rebooted on backup power.

“The encryption wasn’t as complicated as I thought,” he said. “The card had an embedded recovery key.”

“How?” Alessandro asked.

Gianni glanced at me.

“The password was Emma.”

I nearly stopped breathing.

“What?”

“E-M-M-A.”

Noah had hidden the card inside her rabbit.

Then protected it with her name.

My legs weakened.

Alessandro pulled a chair out for me.

I sat because I had no choice.

Gianni clicked the folder.

Inside were dozens of files.

Photographs.

Shipping manifests.

Bank transfers.

Voice recordings.

Scanned handwritten notes.

And a single video labeled:

IF I AM DEAD.

My vision blurred.

I had not seen my husband moving in two years.

Not since the morgue.

“Play it,” Alessandro said.

“No.”

Everyone looked at me.

I could barely breathe.

“That is my husband.”

Alessandro’s voice softened.

“Then you decide.”

I stared at the screen.

Noah’s face waited inside the little video thumbnail.

The same dark hair.

The same crooked smile.

The same eyes Emma had inherited.

I touched the screen.

“Play it.”

Gianni clicked.

Noah appeared.

He was sitting inside his car.

Rain streaked the windows behind him.

He looked exhausted.

Terrified.

But alive.

“If Elena ever sees this,” he began, “I’m sorry.”

My hand flew to my mouth.

Emma looked up.

“Daddy?”

Every person in the room froze.

I pulled her close.

“Yes, sweetheart.”

On the screen Noah swallowed.

“Elena, I lied to you about some of my work. Not about loving you. Never about that.”

Tears burned my eyes.

“I took a consulting contract with Moretti Logistics nine months ago. Officially, I was auditing cybersecurity vulnerabilities in their port systems. Unofficially, I was asked to trace financial leaks.”

Alessandro’s expression changed.

“Asked by whom?” Carlo murmured.

Noah continued.

“At first, I thought I was looking for a thief. Missing containers. Altered manifests. False route changes. Then I found bodies connected to the changes.”

No one moved.

“I discovered someone inside the Moretti organization has been feeding routes, accounts, security schedules, and identities to a separate network.”

He held up a piece of paper.

The same broken crown symbol.

“They call themselves Corona Spezzata. The Broken Crown.”

Don Ricci cursed under his breath.

Alessandro’s fingers tightened around the chair behind me.

Noah leaned closer to the camera.

“The symbol isn’t a gang mark. It’s an accounting mark. It indicates assets approved for removal.”

My skin went cold.

“Assets?” I whispered.

Noah explained.

“Money. Shipments. Evidence. People.”

Emma rested her head against me.

I held her tighter.

Noah continued.

“If someone has this video, then they probably found me.”

My tears fell silently.

“I copied everything I could. Names are coded, but the original ledger is somewhere inside Villa Moretti. The digital files will show the pattern. The physical ledger proves who authorized it.”

Alessandro moved closer to the laptop.

“Where?”

Noah looked directly into the camera.

“The person running it sits close enough to Alessandro Moretti to know which glass he drinks from.”

Every eye in the room moved toward Carlo.

He did not blink.

The video continued.

“I don’t know whether Moretti himself is involved. I don’t think he is. If he were, I’d already be dead.”

Alessandro’s expression tightened.

Noah gave a humorless smile.

“But there is one thing I know. Someone plans to kill Marco Moretti.”

A glass shattered.

Alessandro had been holding it.

I remembered the whispers among staff.

Marco.

Alessandro’s younger brother.

Dead eighteen months ago in a warehouse explosion near Palermo.

Six months after Noah died.

Onscreen, Noah spoke faster.

“They’re going to make it look like a rival-family attack. The schedule is hidden in the February Palermo transfer files.”

Alessandro looked at Gianni.

“Open them.”

Gianni searched.

Files appeared.

Dates.

Payments.

Initials.

One payment was made four days before Marco Moretti died.

€400,000.

Recipient: V.R.

Vivian stopped breathing.

My eyes moved toward her.

“No,” she whispered.

Alessandro stared at the screen.

“V.R.”

“That could be anyone.”

Nobody answered.

Vivian backed away.

“Alessandro, don’t look at me like that.”

Noah was still speaking.

“If Marco dies, the person behind this will be someone who benefits from isolating Alessandro.”

Alessandro looked as if the floor had disappeared beneath him.

“Stop the video,” he said.

I stood.

“No.”

His eyes met mine.

“My husband died for this.”

Noah’s voice filled the room again.

“There is one more thing.”

He glanced over his shoulder in the recording.

“Someone has been following me. I think they know about Elena.”

I closed my eyes.

“If they come for me, I’ll leave the card inside Emma’s rabbit. Nobody notices toys. Nobody notices children.”

A sound escaped my throat.

“They may search our apartment. They may search Elena. But they won’t look twice at a blue rabbit.”

He paused.

Then smiled sadly.

“Emma, if you ever see this when you’re older, Daddy loves you more than every star.”

Emma began sobbing.

I held her against me.

“I love Daddy too.”

Noah’s expression changed.

His smile vanished.

“And Elena…”

He leaned close.

“The traitor is not the man everyone fears.”

My eyes opened.

“He’s the man Alessandro trusts.”

The video ended.

Silence.

Then the east-wing door opened.

Everyone spun.

Carlo Moretti entered.

Except Carlo Moretti was already standing beside us.

For one stunned second, my mind refused to understand.

The man in the doorway was one of Alessandro’s guards.

He had lost his jacket.

His face was pale.

“Boss.”

Alessandro’s hand moved toward his weapon.

“What?”

The guard looked at Carlo.

“We checked the west security room.”

“And?”

“The dead guard wasn’t alone.”

Carlo’s eyes narrowed.

The guard swallowed.

“We found footage recovered from the backup server.”

Alessandro’s voice became very quiet.

“Of what?”

The guard looked directly at Carlo Moretti.

“Someone entering the security room three minutes before the cameras went dark.”

Carlo smiled faintly.

“Then show us.”

The guard hesitated.

“He was wearing your access badge.”

Nobody breathed.

Carlo’s smile disappeared.

And beneath the table, I felt a small hand tugging my dress.

Emma looked up at me.

Then pointed at Carlo.

“Mommy.”

May you like

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“That’s the man Daddy was scared of.”
