Chapter 9 - THE WEDDING CRASH

The sound that ripped through the Cathedral of St. Philip was a collective, suffocating gasp of pure, unadulterated horror.
Two hundred of Atlanta’s most elite citizens stared upward at the giant screens, paralyzed by the graphic, undeniable brutality playing out above the altar. The audio feed echoed through the church's state-of-the-art sound system, booming with crystal clarity off the gothic arches:
“Don’t go near Alyssa again,” Gavin’s amplified voice rang out, cold, ruthless, and devoid of humanity. “She’s our chance to get out of this debt. Once Alyssa signs, her company will belong to this family too. Then she’ll learn exactly what you did.”
"Turn it off! Turn it off this instant!" Naomi shrieked, her aristocratic composure completely shattering into hysteria. She lunged toward the altar steps, her face twisted in rage. "This is a fabrication! It’s AI-generated slander! Gavin, shut that screen down!"
Gavin lunged forward, grabbing my bare shoulder with bruising force. "You crazy bitch! What did you do?!"
Before Gavin could pull me backward, Roman Alvarez materialized from the shadow of the choir stall like a wraith. He caught Gavin’s wrist in an iron grip, twisted his arm behind his back with surgical precision, and forced him to his knees on the marble altar steps with a sickening crunch.
Gavin screamed in pain, writhing on the floor.
"Get your hands off my son!" Elijah bellowed, charging forward, his face mottled red with apoplectic fury. "Do you have any idea who I am?! I sit on the board of—"
"You sit on an indictment for federal wire fraud, interstate kidnapping, and conspiracy to commit extortion, Elijah," a booming voice echoed from the rear of the sanctuary.
The congregation turned toward the main aisle.
Walking through the double oak doors, flanked by four uniformed federal marshals and Marcus Vance, were Damian and Brianna Herndon.
Damian walked tall, supported by Brianna, dressed in an immaculate charcoal suit. The color was returning to his cheeks, his eyes blazing with righteous vengeance. Brianna wore a stunning navy dress, her head held high, looking every inch the proud Montgomery heiress she had been before they caged her.
The church erupted into absolute bedlam.
"Damian?!" Naomi gasped, clutching her chest, stumbling backward against the front pew. "No... no, you're in South Carolina! You're sick!"
"I was never sick, Mother," Damian’s voice carried through the sanctuary with thunderous authority. "You and Father drugged me, locked me in an unlicensed holding facility, and tried to deport me to Belize on a forged passport so you could bleed Brianna’s trust to pay your offshore gambling debts!"
The screens above the altar shifted. The video of Brianna's beating vanished, replaced by high-resolution scans of Elijah’s secret ledgers, the twenty-two-million-dollar Cayman loan notes, the forged medical power-of-attorney documents, and the bank transfers routing stolen Montgomery trust funds directly into Elijah’s personal accounts.
A prominent federal judge sitting in the third row stood up, his face pale with disgust. "My God, Elijah... it's all true."
"No! It's a setup! She set us up!" Gavin roared from the altar floor, his face pressed against the cold stone as Roman held him down. He glared up at me, his eyes bloodshot, spitting venom. "You signed the contract, Alyssa! You signed it! I have administrative authority over your accounts! You gave it to me!"
I stepped down the altar steps, my ivory silk train gliding behind me, until I stood directly over him. I looked down at the man who had thought he could cage me, break me, and strip my life's work away.
"Did you read page twenty-two, Gavin?" I asked softly, my voice carrying clearly through the silent, terrified room. "Clause 18, Subsection C? Any attempt to execute financial transfers or consolidate corporate assets prior to the legal filing of a certified marriage certificate constitutes an irrevocable confession of grand larceny and an immediate forfeiture of all personal collateral to Wellman Media."
Gavin’s jaw dropped. The venom drained from his eyes, replaced by a sudden, sickening realization of absolute checkmate.
"You never married me, Gavin," I whispered with a cold, triumphant smile. "The minister never said the words. The certificate was never signed. But your electronic signature on Marcus’s contract is legally binding. As of eight o'clock this morning, Wellman Media holds a secured primary lien on the Buckhead mansion, your father’s vehicles, your investment portfolios, and every asset this family claims to own."
"You... you destroyed us," Gavin choked out, tears of humiliation finally spilling down his cheeks.
"You destroyed yourselves," I replied. "I just turned on the lights."
Chief Deputy Marshal Thomas stepped onto the altar, unholstering a pair of steel handcuffs. The sharp click-clack of the ratchets echoed through the sacred silence.
"Elijah Herndon, Naomi Herndon, Gavin Herndon," the marshal announced, his voice carrying the full weight of the United States government. "You are under arrest pursuant to a federal warrant issued by the Northern District of Georgia. You have the right to remain silent..."
Two more marshals moved to the front pew, snapping cuffs around Elijah’s trembling wrists. Naomi collapsed onto the cushioned pew, weeping hysterically, tearing at her pearls as socialites scrambled away from her in disgust, pulling out their phones to record every second of the Herndon family's public execution.
As Gavin was hauled to his feet in chains, his expensive tuxedo rumpled and ruined, he looked at me one last time, begging with his eyes.
May you like
I didn't blink. I didn't offer pity.
I turned my back on him, gathered the train of my ivory gown, and walked down the aisle toward Brianna and Damian.
