Chapter 5 - THE EMBERS OF TRUTH

Dorian did not raise his hands. His weapon had been thrown three feet away into the mud by the concussive blast, but his posture remained rigid, his jaw set like iron as he kept his broad shoulders squarely between the laser dot and the shivering child behind him.

"You're the one who hunted her," Dorian said, his voice a low, gravelly snarl that cut through the ringing in his ears. "Who paid you? Was it Vance? Or did the board decide a dead child was too inconvenient for the merger?"

The scarred man gave a dry, humorless chuckle that sounded like stones rattling in a tin can. "A corporate board? Mr. Mercer, you billionaires think everything begins and ends on Wall Street. You think money is the only thing men kill for."

He took two deliberate steps forward, the muzzle of his weapon never wavering.

"Her name isn't Lyra," the man said casually. "Her name is Subject Seven. And she represents a thirty-billion-dollar pharmaceutical settlement that your family's foundation was supposed to pay out before you buried your pretty wife."

Dorian’s eyes narrowed. "What are you talking about?"

"Ask the good doctor behind you," the scarred man sneered, his cold eyes flicking toward Dr. Kenneth Morris. "Why don't you ask Dr. Morris why he spent the last seven years signing off on dead infants at Saint Jude’s Memorial?"

Dorian’s head whipped around.

Dr. Morris was leaning against the damp granite wall, his face utterly devoid of color. The silver-haired physician wasn't looking at the gunman; he was staring down at his own trembling hands, his breathing shallow and rapid. In his right pocket, the vial containing Lyra’s DNA swab seemed to burn like a hot coal.

"Kenneth?" Dorian whispered, the foundation of his entire reality beginning to splinter. "What is he talking about?"

"He's lying, Dorian!" Morris cried out, his voice shrill and cracked with terror. "He's trying to disorient you! Shoot him!"

"With what, Kenneth?" Dorian retorted coldly, never taking his eyes completely off the scarred gunman.

The man with the scar smiled. "Dr. Morris here was the chief medical liaison for the Mercer-Sterling Reproductive Research Institute eight years ago. Your late wife, Clara, wasn't suffering from an ordinary high-risk pregnancy, Dorian. She discovered that the experimental fertility compounds being developed by your own father’s company were causing catastrophic genetic anomalies in low-income clinical trial patients. Hundreds of them."

The subterranean air felt thick, suffocating.

"Clara was going to blow the whistle," the gunman continued, stepping closer. "She had the hard drives. She had the test results. But then she went into early labor. Your dear father couldn't allow his empire to crumble. So when the baby was born healthy, they drugged your wife into a coma, faked the infant's death, and handed the child over to a lab tech named Evelyn Brooks to be raised off the grid until the statutes of limitations expired."

"Evelyn..." Lyra whispered from beneath Dorian's coat. Her small hands gripped Dorian's shirt. "Auntie Evelyn. She said... she said the grandfather was the devil."

The room spun violently around Dorian. His father—Arthur Mercer, the revered philanthropist who had died of a stroke three years ago—had orchestrated the destruction of his family?

"Evelyn grew a conscience," the gunman muttered, shaking his head. "She got cancer two months ago. She knew she was dying, so she tried to bring the kid back to you. I took care of Evelyn in her cabin three days ago, but the slippery little brat climbed out the storm drain before I could finish the cleanup."

"You killed her," Lyra sobbed, the tears finally breaking through her frozen composure. "You hurt Auntie!"

"And now, kid, I'm finishing the contract," the man said, raising his finger against the trigger.

"Wait!"

Dr. Morris suddenly lunged forward. But he didn't attack the gunman. He threw himself on his knees at the gunman's feet, his hands raised in frantic supplication.

"I kept the secret!" Morris wailed hysterically. "I certified the death certificate! I altered the autopsy files! Arthur promised my family would be protected! The current chairman promised me!"

The gunman looked down at the pathetic, groveling physician with naked disgust.

"The current chairman doesn't like loose ends, Doctor," the man said.

THWIP.

A single suppressed shot took Dr. Morris between the eyes. The physician collapsed into the salt mud without a sound.

In that split second of distraction, Dorian lunged.
