Chapter 5 - THE PHANTOM EMPIRE

The words hung in the air of the penthouse like poisonous gas.

Briana blinked, her mouth opening and closing soundlessly. "What... what do you mean, distraction?"

"Look at this, Briana," I said, tossing the unfolded bank statement onto the island so it slid across the slick marble and stopped right before her hands. "Read the recipient of the disbursements from the Apex Bridge loan."

Briana looked down, her trembling fingers smoothing out the crinkled paper. Her eyes scanned the lines.

December 12 - Wire Transfer Out: $350,000 to Horizon Cay Investments LLC.

January 18 - Wire Transfer Out: $420,000 to Horizon Cay Investments LLC.

March 04 - Wire Transfer Out: $280,000 to Horizon Cay Investments LLC.

She looked up, her expression a mix of confusion and mounting dread. "Horizon Cay? What is that? Dad told me the money went to a digital marketing syndicate in Los Angeles to buy automated engagement and secure brand sponsorships for me!"

"There is no digital marketing syndicate," I said, stepping behind her and pointing a finger at the wire routing details. "Horizon Cay Investments is a domestic asset-holding company registered in Sarasota, Florida. Look at the authorized signatory listed on the receiving account: Douglas E. Hale."

Briana’s head snapped toward our father.

Douglas had slouched into the armchair, his head buried in his hands, refusing to look up.

"Dad?" Briana’s voice was no longer shrill; it was small, fragile, sounding like the seven-year-old girl who used to cry when her bicycle chain slipped off the gear. "Dad, what is Horizon Cay? Where did my loan money go?"

"It wasn't your loan money, Briana!" Douglas suddenly spat out, lifting his head. His eyes were bloodshot, rimmed with a manic, desperate fury. "You didn't earn a cent of it! You couldn't even keep your apartment clean without your mother driving down here twice a week to do your laundry! You spent five years pretending to be an internet celebrity while your mother and I spent our entire retirement subsidizing your pathetic lifestyle!"

"Douglas, don't!" Beverly cried out from the couch, her hands clutching her temples. "Don't do this now!"

"No, Beverly, let him talk," I said, crossing my arms. "Let him explain to his golden child how he used her as a human shield."

I pulled my phone out and logged into the Florida Division of Corporations portal on my browser. As an auditor, tracing corporate entities across state borders was second nature. It took me forty-five seconds to pull the corporate filings for Horizon Cay Investments LLC.

"Here it is," I read off the screen. "Horizon Cay Investments. Formed two years ago. Sole Manager: Douglas Hale. Secondary Beneficiary: Beverly Hale. Nature of business: Commercial Real Estate Acquisition."

I looked up at Douglas.

"You bought a property," I stated.

Douglas didn't answer. He stared at the floorboards, his jaw working silently.

"He bought a four-unit beachfront rental property in Siesta Key," I continued, piecing together the timeline with mathematical certainty. "Two years ago, Dad realized his pension from the logistics company was dry. You had mortgaged your home in Naperville to the hilt to pay for Briana’s car leases, her credit cards, and your own country club dues. You were six months away from total bankruptcy. So you hatched a plan."

Briana was shaking so violently she had to hold onto the edge of the marble island to stay upright. "He... he used my company?"

"He created B-Luxe Media," I told her, looking at her with cold pity. "He encouraged you to blow up your social media profile. He helped you fabricate the illusion that you were a rising digital mogul with massive future cash flows. Why? Because banks won't lend a dime to a seventy-year-old retired warehouse manager with bad credit. But private mezzanine lenders will issue millions to a young, shiny commercial enterprise with high projected receivables—especially if they have an established corporate guarantor."

"And that guarantor was supposed to be Simone," Joel added, his voice dripping with disgust. "You set up Briana as the bait, you stole Simone's credit and business reputation to secure the hook, and then you funneled over a million dollars down to Florida to buy yourself a retirement paradise."

"We were going to sell it!" Beverly suddenly wailed, rocking on the cushions. "We were going to renovate the villas, flip them in the spring, and pay back the loan before anyone found out! Douglas had a contractor! We were going to make two million dollars on the flip! We were doing it for all of us!"

"Doing it for all of us?!" Briana screamed. The sound tore from her throat like an animal in a trap. She lunged across the living room, grabbing a heavy glass vase filled with dried eucalyptus and hurling it at her parents.

The vase shattered against the wall inches above Douglas’s head, showering him in water-stained glass shards and brittle branches.

"You told me I was special!" Briana roared, tears streaming down her face, her silk robe billowing around her. "You told me Simone was cold, that she was jealous of me, that she was selfish because she wouldn't share her money! You told me that if I just signed those corporate papers, I’d have my own brand! You turned me into a felon to buy yourselves a beach house?!"

"Shut up, Briana!" Douglas barked, brushing glass from his sleeves. "You enjoyed every single luxury we provided! You never asked where the money came from! You just held out your hand like a spoiled child! You think you're innocent? Your name is on the CEO line! If we go down, you go down first!"

"Nobody is going to Florida," I cut in, my voice slicing through the screaming match.

They all fell quiet, three pairs of eyes turning toward me.

"I have the bank statements," I said, tapping the accordion folder. "I have the Florida corporate filings. And I have forty-six hours before Vance Sterling files his motion. Here is what happens next."

"Simone," Douglas said, his voice suddenly shifting into a wheedling, pathetic whine. "Simone, sweetheart... you're an accountant. You know how these deals work. If you turn us in, the bank seizes the Siesta Key property in a fire sale. They'll sell it for fifty cents on the dollar! We'll lose everything. But if you help us... if you take over the management of the property, we can finish the renovations. We can list it—"

"You really don't understand who I am, do you, Dad?" I said, looking at him with utter detachment. "You spent thirty-eight years treating me like an appliance. A machine that produces stability when you cause chaos. You thought because I didn't scream, because I didn't throw tantrums like Briana, that I was weak. That I would absorb your abuse forever."

I picked up the bank statements, slid them back into my leather portfolio, and zipped it shut.

"The Siesta Key property isn't going to be flipped, Dad. It's going to be surrendered. And you two are going to central booking."

"Simone, please!" Beverly dropped to her knees on the rug, crawling toward me with her hands clasped. "Don't let them arrest us! The shame... what will the family say? What will the neighbors think?!"

"You should have thought about the neighbors when you brought spray paint to my restaurant, Mother," I said, stepping back so her hands couldn't touch my shoes.

I turned to Joel. "Call Henderson. Tell him the suspects are at this address."

Before Joel could pull out his phone, the front door of the penthouse rattled. A heavy, rhythmic knocking boomed through the foyer.

THUD. THUD. THUD.

"Chicago Police Department! Open the door!"

Douglas froze, his face turning the color of ash. Beverly collapsed onto her side, weeping hysterically into the carpet. Briana stepped back into the shadows of the hallway, pulling her robe tightly around herself as if she could vanish into the drywall.

Joel walked to the door, unlocked the deadbolt, and pulled it wide.

Officer Henderson stood in the hallway, flanked by two armed uniform officers and a plainclothes detective with a gold shield clipped to his belt.

"Mrs. Carter," Henderson said, tipping his cap slightly. "We tracked the suspects' vehicle to the garage downstairs. Judge signed the felony arrest warrants twenty minutes ago."

He stepped into the penthouse, his eyes sweeping over the shattered vase, the spray paint cans on the table, and my parents cowering on the floor.

"Douglas Hale? Beverly Hale?" The detective stepped forward, unholstering two pairs of steel handcuffs. "You're under arrest for commercial burglary, felony criminal damage to property, and conspiracy."

As the steel cuffs clicked around my father’s wrists, Douglas twisted his neck, his eyes locking onto mine with pure, unadulterated venom. "You're no daughter of mine, Simone. You’re a monster. You destroyed this family."

"No, Douglas," I replied, holding his gaze until he looked away. "I just balanced the ledger."
