Chapter 1 - THE MAID OUT BACK

After six years of grueling contracts in Dubai managing offshore infrastructure, I flew back to Austin, Texas, unannounced. My single goal was to hold my sixty-two-year-old mother, Martha, inside the $600,000 suburban sanctuary I had paid for in pure cash. Instead of my mother greeting me at the oak double doors, my sister Khloe’s pompous husband, Julian, answered the door clad in a silk robe with a glass of top-shelf scotch in his hand. He looked down his nose at my travel-stained clothes and dismissively directed me around the perimeter: "If you’re here to clean, the maid is out back. Make it quick. We have guests coming at seven."

Stunned into dead silence, I walked around the lawn to the limestone patio and found my mother on her swollen, trembling knees, scouring grease off outdoor stainless steel counters with a rough bristle brush. Tears streamed down her hollow cheeks when she realized I was home. Over two agonizing years, Khloe and Julian had turned a two-week guest visit into a ruthless takeover, usurping the primary bedroom, siphoning the $3,000 monthly allowance I wired her, and emotionally blackmailing her into domestic servitude by threatening that I would sell the house out from under her if she dared complain.

I pulled my mother to her feet, tossed the scrub brush into the turf, and marched inside to confront the usurpers. Khloe and Julian sneered at my fury, hiding behind distorted interpretations of Texas tenant rights and daring me to file an eviction. I walked away without a fistfight. I tucked my mother into a five-star hotel with a hot dinner and private nursing care, and then called Harrison Vance—my cutthroat corporate asset attorney. I transmitted deed registrations, tax records, utility titles, and bank statements showing unilateral ownership. By 8:59 p.m., while Julian and Khloe threw an ostentatious dinner party for Austin’s elite, three black SUVs rolled up to the curb behind me.
