Chapter 11 - Under the Romano Wing

By noon the next day, the storm had passed, leaving behind a crisp, crystal-blue winter sky.

Inside the grand master bedroom of the Romano estate, a massive fire roared in the stone hearth. Clara Bennett sat in a velvet armchair by the bed, weeping quiet tears of overwhelming relief as she watched her daughter sleep peacefully beneath three layers of down blankets.

Lily was warm. Her color had returned to a rosy pink. In her right arm, she clutched Poppy the rabbit, who had been thoroughly dried and brushed by Mrs. Gable herself.

The bedroom door opened softly.

Alessandro stepped inside, followed by Enzo.

Clara stood up immediately, but Alessandro raised a gentle hand, stopping her. "Sit down, Clara."

He walked over to the side of the bed, looking down at the sleeping child. His face was calm now, but the hard, impenetrable mask he had worn for nineteen years was gone forever. Around his eyes were lines of genuine exhaustion and something entirely new: tenderness.

"Jason was apprehended at the Canadian border two hours ago," Enzo reported quietly from the doorway. "The bonds and the ledgers were fully recovered intact."

Clara lowered her head, trembling. "What... what will happen to him?"

Alessandro looked at Clara. In the past, the answer would have been a shallow grave in the pine woods.

"He will serve five years in a secure facility upstate, working off the debt under our supervision," Alessandro said calmly. "He will not touch this family again, but he will live. For your sake. And for hers."

Clara broke into fresh tears, covering her face. "Thank you... thank you, Mr. Romano. I don't know how I can ever repay you—"

"You don't repay me," Alessandro interrupted softly. "You and Lily are moving to the west wing suite this afternoon."

Clara blinked in shock. "The west wing? Sir, that's where the family suites are..."

"You are no longer a maid in this house, Clara," Alessandro said, turning to look at her directly. "You will oversee the estate's charity foundation. And Lily..."

He glanced back at the little girl, who was just beginning to stir beneath the heavy quilt.

"...Lily has an office to run."

Lily rubbed her eyes, stretched her little arms, and saw the tall man standing beside her bed. A bright, gap-toothed smile spread across her face.

"Mister Boss!"

Alessandro sat on the edge of the mattress. For the first time since he was a boy, a genuine, warm smile touched his lips.

"Good afternoon, Miss Bennett."

"Can I have cookies today?"

"As many as you want," Alessandro replied without hesitation. "And Enzo bought twenty-four new red crayons this morning."

Lily cheered, sitting up and throwing her small arms around the neck of the city’s most dangerous man.

Alessandro closed his eyes, wrapped his strong arms around her, and held her close.

The fortress of stone and steel had not fallen to rivals, police, or armies. It had been conquered by a three-year-old child with a one-eared rabbit, who had taught a king that a home is not measured by the strength of its iron gates, but by the people you are willing to burn the world to protect.
