Chapter 8 - THE SECRET BENEATH THE ARCHER EMPIRE

The blast did not destroy the armored command vehicle.

It did something worse.

It flipped it.

Iris felt herself become weightless.

Then glass.

Metal.

Pain.

Darkness.

She woke upside down against a seat belt.

Victoria was calling her name.

“Iris!”

“I’m okay.”

She was not sure.

Smoke filled the cabin.

Agent Bennett kicked at a jammed door.

Outside, gunfire erupted.

Thomas had used the tunnel system to bypass the tactical perimeter.

The vehicle door finally opened.

Security dragged them out.

Victoria’s forehead was bleeding.

Iris’s shoulder screamed.

“Where’s Thomas?”

Nobody answered.

Then a guard fell.

A shot cracked from behind a concrete barrier.

“Move!”

They ran toward a second armored position.

Thomas appeared thirty yards away.

He fired again.

Victoria stumbled.

“Mom!”

Iris grabbed her.

No blood.

She had slipped.

Thomas disappeared behind machinery.

Agents pursued.

Within ninety seconds, the area fell silent.

“He’s gone,” Bennett said.

Victoria stared.

“How?”

“Maintenance access.”

“There isn’t one.”

“There is according to the old plans.”

Iris looked toward the tunnel.

“Old plans drawn by who?”

Everyone paused.

Archer Rail Systems had been built decades earlier.

Thomas had supervised security retrofits.

He knew every abandoned corridor.

Every emergency passage.

Every forgotten door.

They rescued Isabella and Richard.

Richard Morgan survived.

When he woke, he immediately requested immunity.

Victoria laughed when she heard.

“He helped destroy my daughter’s life and now wants immunity?”

Bennett said, “He may know where Thomas will go.”

Richard’s statement revealed the larger truth.

He had not participated in the original kidnapping.

But twelve years earlier, Thomas recruited him into a scheme to manipulate Archer voting control.

Thomas believed Evelyn was dead.

Then, six years ago, Rebecca Vale’s old storage unit was auctioned.

A private investigator found references to a surviving child.

Thomas began searching again.

Three years ago, the search reached schools and orphanages.

That was how Richard noticed Iris.

But without DNA, they could not be certain.

Then Ian provided the birthmark.

The design theft became useful.

If Ian controlled Iris emotionally, Richard could keep her close.

Monitor her.

Prevent her from attracting powerful attention.

Isabella listened to her father confess from a hospital bed.

She stared at him as if he were a stranger.

“You used me?”

Richard closed his eyes.

“I was protecting our family.”

“You told me to date Ian.”

“I encouraged—”

“You told me Iris was trash.”

Richard said nothing.

“You knew she might be Evelyn Archer.”

Silence.

Isabella began crying.

“You made me hurt someone because you were afraid of her name.”

Richard reached for her.

She moved away.

“Don’t.”

Outside the room, Iris heard enough.

She had imagined hating Isabella forever.

Instead, she felt something more complicated.

Pity.

That did not erase what Isabella had done.

But evil had moved through both their lives using different tools.

Thomas used fear.

Richard used ambition.

Ian used Iris’s love.

The next day, Iris visited Ethan.

He was pale but awake.

When he saw her, he smiled.

“You look terrible.”

She burst into tears.

“You got shot and that’s what you say?”

“Trying to keep standards.”

She hugged him carefully.

“I thought you died.”

“I considered it.”

“Not funny.”

“Little funny.”

She laughed anyway.

Then he noticed her wrist.

A new hospital band read:

EVELYN IRIS ARCHER.

“So,” he said.

“So.”

“Do I have to call you Evelyn?”

“No.”

“Good. You look like an Iris.”

She sat beside him.

“I don’t know what I am.”

“Same annoying person as last week.”

“I’m serious.”

“So am I.”

He looked at her.

“A name doesn’t change who stayed up all night fixing my robotics code because I was too dumb to find the bug.”

“You weren’t dumb.”

“I had plugged the sensor in backward.”

“Okay. A little dumb.”

He smiled.

“You were Iris before you knew you were Evelyn. You can be both.”

She squeezed his hand.

Outside Ethan’s room, Victoria waited.

She had heard everything.

“You like him,” she said once they walked away.

Iris almost choked.

“What?”

“Ethan.”

“He’s my best friend.”

Victoria gave her the look of a woman who had negotiated billion-dollar mergers.

“Of course.”

“Mom.”

The word slipped out.

Both women stopped walking.

Iris froze.

Victoria’s eyes filled instantly.

Iris panicked.

“I didn’t mean—”

“Please don’t take it back.”

They stood in the hospital hallway crying and laughing at the same time.

Then Margaret approached.

Her face serious.

“We found something in Thomas’s corporate archive.”

They returned to Archer Tower.

The file had been hidden inside old property records.

A letter from Daniel Archer.

Iris’s father.

Written fifteen years ago.

Victoria read it aloud.

If Evelyn is alive, there is something she must know about Archer Group.

Our family fortune carries a debt.

The earliest Archer medical division tested cardiac devices through ethically questionable overseas programs in the 1980s. Victoria and I shut the program down when we discovered it, compensated known victims, and created the patient safety foundation.

But some records disappeared.

Thomas found them.

He has used them for years as leverage against board members.

If Evelyn ever inherits control, she must not protect the family name at the expense of the truth.

Tell her this:

A legacy worth keeping can survive honesty.

Victoria lowered the letter.

Iris looked stunned.

“You knew?”

“Some of it.”

“Not all?”

“No.”

Margaret opened another folder.

Thomas had stored proof.

Names.

Payments.

Illegal trials.

Dozens of victims whose families had never been compensated.

Victoria closed her eyes.

Iris felt something inside her shift.

For days, she had thought becoming an Archer meant gaining something.

Money.

Family.

Power.

Now she understood it meant inheriting responsibility too.

“We release everything,” she said.

Victoria looked at her.

“The company could lose billions.”

“Then it loses billions.”

“You’re certain?”

Iris looked at her father’s words.

“A legacy worth keeping can survive honesty.”

Victoria smiled faintly.

“Daniel would have adored you.”

They prepared a public disclosure.

But when Margaret attempted to upload the archive, every screen in Archer Tower went black.

A message appeared.

HELLO, EVELYN.

Then:

YOU WANT THE TRUTH?

COME GET THE REST OF IT.

A live security feed appeared.

Thomas Vale stood inside the Archer Group executive vault.

A vault accessible only through biometric authorization.

Victoria stared in disbelief.

“How did he get inside?”

Thomas lifted something toward the camera.

A severed biometric access prosthetic copied from an executive’s hand profile.

Then he smiled.

“Your company has always had terrible taste in men, Victoria.”

Behind him sat dozens of original documents.

May you like

And a fuel canister.

Thomas struck a match.
