Chapter 9 - THE WEDDING ON THE CLIFF

Claire survived the shooting.

The bullet passed through her upper shoulder without striking an artery.

She was taken into protective custody from the hospital.

For the first time since the investigation began, she fully cooperated.

She admitted planting the bracelet.

She admitted striking Emma.

She admitted forging Nathan’s authorization documents.

She admitted pushing Arthur after he confronted her on the staircase.

“I didn’t mean for him to fall all the way down,” she told investigators.

It was not an excuse.

She knew that.

Nathan knew it.

Emma knew it.

Claire also identified every account Adrian had used, every conversation she remembered with Hale, every password, every secret meeting location.

None led to Adrian.

He had disappeared.

Neither did they lead to Hale.

Nathan wanted the wedding canceled.

Evelyn wanted something else.

“We have Claire.”

“We still don’t have Hale.”

“He shot at us.”

“We have evidence someone shot at you.”

Nathan stared at her.

“You know it was him.”

“I know. A jury needs more.”

Emma stood near the conference room window.

“The wedding.”

Nathan turned sharply.

“No.”

Emma ignored him.

“Hale still believes Claire can appear?”

Evelyn answered.

“Her injury has not been publicly reported. The story is that she entered a private medical facility for exhaustion.”

Nathan shook his head.

“We are not putting Claire back on that terrace.”

“We don’t need Claire.”

Emma understood.

Nathan did too.

His face changed.

“No.”

Evelyn remained quiet.

Emma turned.

“What?”

Nathan walked toward her.

“Absolutely not.”

“Nathan.”

“No.”

“You don’t even know what she’s suggesting.”

“I know exactly what she’s suggesting.”

Evelyn said, “A decoy.”

Nathan looked furious.

“Find someone else.”

“Hale watches Emma.”

“Exactly.”

“He may believe Emma will attend because of the scandal.”

Emma crossed her arms.

“If I’m there, he reacts.”

“No.”

“Nathan.”

“No.”

She stared at him.

“You don’t own my decisions.”

His jaw tightened.

“I know.”

“Then stop acting like you do.”

“I’m trying to keep you alive.”

“And I’m trying to find the man who may have murdered my mother.”

Nathan went silent.

Emma’s voice softened.

“You don’t get to tell me I should have listened to danger, then refuse to listen when I tell you I’m choosing to face it.”

He looked away.

The wedding proceeded.

Officially.

Eleven days later, two hundred invited guests arrived at the Cole estate.

Some were real friends.

Some business partners.

Some undercover officers.

Some journalists invited weeks earlier.

The string quartet played.

Champagne moved through the crowd.

The western terrace glittered beneath late-afternoon sunlight.

And beyond the stone barrier, Blackstone Canyon dropped nearly a thousand feet toward a river white with spring runoff.

Claire arrived by private car.

She wore red.

Not white.

The decision was deliberate.

The wedding dress never appeared.

Nathan stood near the terrace entrance in a black suit.

When Claire approached, cameras turned toward them.

She smiled.

He did not.

“This feels insane,” she whispered.

“It is.”

“Does Emma hate me?”

Nathan looked at her.

Claire laughed sadly.

“Stupid question.”

“Yes.”

“I deserve it.”

“Yes.”

Claire swallowed.

“She should stay away from the edge.”

Nathan’s eyes narrowed.

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

“Claire.”

“Hale mentioned the western barrier once.”

“When?”

“Months ago. Adrian joked that your view was worth dying for.”

Nathan’s blood chilled.

He touched his earpiece.

“Evelyn. Check the western barrier again.”

Agents moved discreetly.

Emma arrived thirty minutes later through the staff entrance.

She wore a simple dark blue dress.

No uniform.

That mattered to her.

Dolores met her.

“You look beautiful.”

Emma smiled.

“You say that like you didn’t pick the dress.”

“I selected options.”

“You rejected everything I liked.”

“Because you have terrible judgment with formalwear.”

Emma laughed.

Then Dolores’s expression softened.

“Your mother would be proud.”

Emma looked away quickly.

“Don’t do that right now.”

“Fine.”

Dolores took her hand.

“Then I’ll say I’m proud.”

Emma squeezed back.

Nathan saw her from across the terrace.

For several seconds, everything around him disappeared.

Claire noticed.

She followed his gaze.

“That’s how you look at her.”

Nathan stiffened.

“How?”

“Like the room is somewhere you tolerate until you find her.”

He said nothing.

Claire gave a sad smile.

“You never looked at me that way.”

Nathan did not know what to say.

Claire saved him.

“Don’t worry. I know I destroyed whatever right I had to be hurt by that.”

A security officer approached Evelyn.

Whispered.

Her face changed.

She touched her earpiece.

“Nathan.”

He turned.

“The western barrier is compromised.”

“How?”

“Two mounting bolts were cut and replaced with cosmetic caps.”

Nathan stared toward the cliff.

Guests leaned casually against the railing.

“Clear it.”

“We can’t create panic.”

“Then create anything else.”

Within moments, servers began directing guests toward the opposite terrace for an unscheduled champagne toast.

Emma stayed near Dolores.

Claire scanned the crowd.

Then she froze.

Adrian.

He stood near the service corridor wearing a catering jacket.

Claire’s face drained.

“Adrian.”

Nathan followed her gaze.

Adrian disappeared.

Claire ran after him.

“Claire!”

Nathan followed.

Emma saw them.

So did Dolores.

Evelyn’s agents moved.

Adrian pushed through the north service hall.

Claire caught him near the kitchen.

“What are you doing?”

He turned.

His eyes were wild.

“You ruined everything.”

“Where is Hale?”

“Gone.”

“You idiot.”

“You talked.”

“He was going to kill Nathan!”

Adrian laughed.

“He was going to erase the debt.”

“By murder!”

“Do you think I had choices?”

Claire slapped him.

Adrian grabbed her wrist.

“You always had Nathan protecting you.”

“You dragged me into this.”

“I saved our family.”

“You destroyed it.”

A federal agent shouted.

Adrian ran.

Claire followed him through a side exit.

Nathan emerged seconds later.

“Where?”

Emma pointed.

“Terrace path.”

They all moved.

The path curved toward the cliffside garden.

Adrian vanished behind guests.

Claire reached the western terrace again.

Then she saw Victor Hale.

Standing near Emma.

Hale wore a tuxedo.

He had entered as a donor using false credentials.

His smile was calm.

Emma recognized him from photographs.

Every instinct screamed.

Hale leaned close.

“Your mother was braver.”

Emma went cold.

“You killed her.”

“She asked too many questions.”

Emma’s breathing stopped.

There it was.

Not recorded?

She glanced toward Dolores.

Dolores touched the brooch on her jacket.

A hidden microphone.

Hale noticed the movement.

His smile vanished.

He reached inside his coat.

Emma stepped backward.

Claire saw it.

“Hale!”

He turned.

Agents shouted.

Guests screamed.

Hale shoved through the crowd.

Nathan moved toward Emma.

Adrian appeared from the opposite side and tackled an agent.

Chaos exploded.

Claire ran toward Emma.

Emma mistook the movement.

She backed toward the compromised railing.

Claire screamed.

“Move away from the edge!”

Emma could not hear over the screaming guests.

Hale collided with Claire.

She spun.

Her hands flew outward.

From Nathan’s angle, everything happened exactly as he would remember it forever.

Claire’s palms hit Emma squarely between the shoulders.

“CLAIRE!”

Emma stumbled toward the cliff.

Her body struck the weakened barrier.

Metal tore free.

She fell forward.

At the last second, Emma grabbed Claire’s wrist.

Claire’s red stiletto slid across loose gravel.

For one impossible second, both women hung between balance and disaster.

Then Claire went over.

Nathan ran.

Emma screamed as Claire’s weight pulled her forward.

The broken barrier disappeared into the canyon.

Claire struck a narrow maintenance ledge fifteen feet below and rolled toward the outer edge.

Emma’s hands slipped.

Nathan was still twenty feet away.

He would not reach her.

Then Dolores Bennett threw herself to the ground.

She caught Emma’s wrist.

The force nearly dragged the sixty-two-year-old woman over with her.

“DOLORES!”

“I have her!”

Another security officer grabbed Dolores around the waist.

Nathan reached them.

Together they pulled Emma back onto the terrace.

Emma collapsed.

Nathan wrapped both arms around her.

Below them, Claire lay motionless on the maintenance ledge.

Alive.

Barely.

Federal agents secured Adrian.

Hale ran toward the north stairs.

Evelyn tackled him before he reached the doors.

Guests watched in stunned silence.

Sirens rose in the distance.

Emma shook violently against Nathan.

Then Claire moved below.

Her fingers curled against stone.

“Help her,” Emma whispered.

Nathan stared down.

Claire had tried to destroy Emma.

Humiliated her.

Framed her.

Assaulted her.

Yet Emma was crying.

“Help her.”

Mountain rescue teams arrived.

Claire was pulled from the ledge seventeen minutes later with a fractured leg, broken wrist, and concussion.

She survived.

So did Emma.

So did the hidden microphone in Dolores’s brooch.

And when federal investigators replayed the recording, they heard Victor Hale clearly tell Emma:

“Your mother was braver.”

Then Emma:

“You killed her.”

Then Hale:

“She asked too many questions.”

Nathan sat beside Emma in the medical tent as the recording played.

His face went pale.

Emma stared ahead.

Her mother finally had an answer.

But Dolores had one more recording.

One Nathan had never heard.

She reached into her bag.

“This,” she said, “is the truth you refused to see months ago.”

Nathan looked at her.

“What is it?”

Dolores pressed play.

May you like

Claire’s voice filled the room.

And Nathan realized the conspiracy had begun even earlier than any of them knew.
