Chapter 6 - THE FATHER'S RETURN

"Theodore, look out!" William lunged forward, grabbing the billionaire by the collar of his shredded coat and dragging him behind the concrete ice machine enclosure just as the black truck plowed into the front wall of Room 114, collapsing the entire brick facade in an avalanche of mortar and dust.

Agent Morrison opened fire from the flank, putting three precision armor-piercing rounds through the truck's engine block. The radiator exploded in a cloud of white steam, killing the motor instantly. The driver threw the door open to flee on foot, but Tom Bradley arrived from the tree line, leveling his 12-gauge shotgun directly at the driver's chest.

"Don't even twitch, son," Tom barked through the howling wind. "You're on Oklahoma soil now."

The storm seemed to pause, the deafening thunder rolling away to the east. Rain continued to fall in a gentle, rhythmic patter against the pavement.

William hauled Theodore to his feet. The CEO was shaking uncontrollably, his hand clutching his fractured ribs, but his eyes were desperately searching the darkness.

"They're in the SUV," William said quietly, placing a steady hand on the billionaire's trembling shoulder. "Harper has them."

Theodore staggered toward the black Suburban as if moving through deep water. When Agent Morrison opened the heavy rear door, the warm interior light clicked on.

There, nestled safely in the center console area, Harper was tucking a dry woolen blanket around the two babies. One of the twins had just fallen asleep; the other looked up with wide, curious gray eyes—the exact same eyes as the broken man standing in the rain.

Theodore collapsed onto his knees on the floor of the vehicle, burying his face in the soft fabric of the baby blankets. A deep, guttural sob ripped from his chest—a sound of pure, unadulterated relief that silenced the entire motel parking lot.

"Thomas... James..." Theodore whispered, kissing their tiny foreheads over and over, his tears washing the grime from their cheeks. "You're here. You're alive. God, you're alive..."

Harper reached out her small hand and touched Theodore's damp cheek, exactly the way her mother Sarah had touched hers in the hospice room.

"They didn't cry much," Harper said matter-of-factly. "I told them Daddy was coming."

Theodore looked up at the little girl, his eyes swimming with reverence. "You're Sarah's daughter."

"I'm Harper."

"Your mother was the greatest soul this world ever had," Theodore whispered, his voice trembling with profound emotion. "And you... you saved my entire world."

"We aren't out of the woods yet," Agent Morrison interrupted gently, checking her watch. The glowing dial read 5:15 AM. "The emergency hearing at the Oklahoma County Courthouse is scheduled for 8:30 AM. Julian Bradford's legal team has already filed the ex-parte petition claiming Theodore is deceased or permanently incapacitated, citing the missing person's report from Chicago. If Julian gets that signed order from Judge Vance, he gets immediate custody under state law."

William pulled the titanium flash drive from his pocket and handed it to Theodore. "We pulled this from Kansas."

Theodore's face hardened, the vulnerability of a weeping father instantly transforming into the razor-sharp focus of an industry titan who had built an empire from nothing.

"Julian thinks he bought the courthouse," Theodore said, standing tall despite his cracked ribs. "Let's go show him what happens when you threaten my family."
