Chapter 1 - THE NIGHT SHE FED TWO HUNDRED PEOPLE WITH NOTHING LEFT
Tamara Lewis had built Lewis Table Catering from a borrowed burner, folding tables, and stubborn determination. Six years later, one mechanical failure nearly destroyed everything she had worked for.
Ninety minutes before two hundred guests were supposed to eat at a Seattle banquet, the refrigerated truck carrying her entire cold menu failed. Thousands of dollars in salmon and prepared food were ruined, and three months of profit seemed to disappear in an instant.
Tamara refused to collapse.
With sous-chef Elijah Carter and her small crew, she rebuilt the entire dinner from backup ingredients—ginger-braised chicken, sesame rice, roasted vegetables, greens, and cornbread. By six o’clock, the guests believed the emergency menu had been intentional.
Then Tamara overheard two women discussing her.
Not as the chef who had just saved an event.
As Daniel Kang’s wife.
They whispered that she had “married up.”
Daniel was the powerful CEO of Kang Meridian Logistics, a man feared in boardrooms and respected by people who understood exactly how much influence his family possessed. But lately he had barely been a husband at all. He had missed eleven days of their life together, including important moments in Tamara’s business.
Then Daniel unexpectedly appeared beside the dead refrigerated truck.
After another painful argument about his absence, he handed Tamara an envelope embossed with the Kang family crest.
It was an invitation to Aldercrest, the private estate of the family that had refused to welcome her for two years.
