Chapter 4 - THE SHADOW OF RETRIBUTION

The red flare flared furiously on the smartphone screen, bathing the shattered remains of Whitmore’s premier restaurant in an eerie, apocalyptic glow. Marcus dropped the torch onto the polished hardwood floor, allowing the flames to lick against the leg of a linen-draped table before turning and disappearing into the snowy night.
"Oh God," I choked out, collapsing against the wall of the guest suite, my knees giving way completely. "He trashed your restaurant. He did that because of me. The damages... it's going to cost thousands of dollars. Tens of thousands!"
James didn't flinch. Without taking his eyes off the phone, he tapped a single speed-dial button.
"Julian," James spoke into the receiver, his voice chillingly composed. "Trigger the halon fire-suppression systems at the downtown location immediately. Call the private fire marshals, not the precinct dispatch. Then dispatch our executive security detail to secure the perimeter here at the estate. We have an active hostile stalker. Issue a shoot-on-sight warning for the property boundaries."
He listened for two seconds, nodded, and terminated the call.
"James, please," I begged, tears streaming down my face as I grabbed his sleeve. "Let me go to the police. Let me turn myself in to Marcus, or take Chloe and run to another state! You don't know what he's capable of. He served four years for aggravated assault and armed robbery. He doesn't care about the law, he doesn't care about your money! He will burn down everything you own to get to me!"
James knelt down on one knee so that his eyes were level with mine. The warmth in his hands as he clasped my shoulders was a stark contrast to the predatory coldness of his expression.
"Listen to me, Grace. Carefully," he said, each word deliberate and weighted with absolute authority. "Marcus Vance thinks he is dealing with an ordinary civilian. He thinks you are an isolated, defenseless woman with no resources and nowhere to turn. He doesn't realize who you are with now."
"I’m your cleaner, James! That doesn't make me safe!"
"You were my cleaner," James said evenly. "As of midnight, you are under my personal protection. Marcus Vance just committed felony vandalism, arson, and terroristic threats against an enterprise holding a federal insurance bond. He didn't just target you tonight; he declared war on me. And nobody attacks what is under my roof and survives the fallout."
Downstairs, the low rumble of heavy tires crunching over fresh gravel signaled the arrival of James’s private security detail. Armed men in black tactical gear moved silently around the grounds, setting up motion sensors and securing every entry point.
James led me down to his private study on the ground floor. The room was lined with towering bookshelves of antique leather-bound volumes, flanked by a massive mahogany desk equipped with multiple encrypted monitors. He motioned for me to sit while he pulled open a secure safe behind an oil painting.
"Marcus didn't find you by accident tonight, Grace," James said, pulling out a thick dossier and setting it on the desk. "He had help."
My head snapped up. "What do you mean? Nobody knew where I lived! I used a P.O. box for everything!"
"When you applied for the cleaning position eight months ago, your background check was processed through my hospitality division's human resources department," James explained, his eyes darkening. "That department is overseen by my board’s vice-chairman, Richard Croft."
The name struck me like a physical blow. Richard Croft was a fixture on local television—a wealthy real-estate mogul who owned several properties throughout the city and frequently clashed with James over corporate governance.
"What does a billionaire vice-chairman have to do with an abusive thug like Marcus?" I asked, bewildered.
"Croft has been aggressively buying up municipal debt in the East Ward, attempting to force gentrification so he can clear low-income residents and build high-end luxury condominiums," James revealed, opening the dossier to show photographs of Croft meeting covertly with local gang leaders in shadowy diners. "He uses street-level enforcers to intimidate tenants into abandoning rent-controlled leases. Your ex-boyfriend, Marcus Vance, is one of Croft’s primary muscle-for-hire captains."
The pieces fell together in a terrifying realization. "Marcus wasn't just hunting me... he was working for your business partner?"
"Croft recognized your name on the employment roster months ago," James said grimly. "He kept Marcus on a leash, waiting for the right leverage against me. Croft wants to force me out of the Whitmore Hospitality Group. By using Marcus to create a scandal, attack my flagship property, and potentially kidnap or harm an employee associated with me, he creates a vulnerability he can exploit in the public press and before the board of directors."
Suddenly, the intercom on James’s desk buzzed sharply.
"Sir," the voice of his head of security crackled through the speaker. "We have a breach at the outer gate."
May you like
James lunged forward, hitting the camera toggle. On the screen, a heavy municipal snowplow had violently rammed through the ornate iron gates, splintering them off their hinges. Behind the plow, three dark sedans sped onto the winding private driveway, their headlights cutting through the swirling blizzard like predatory eyes.
Marcus hadn't waited for morning. Backed by Croft's armed mercenaries, he had come straight to the fortress.
