Chapter 4 - THE CONFESSION UNDER FIRE

The cutting torches hissed outside the five-inch steel vault door, spraying showers of blinding white sparks through the seams. The metal began to glow cherry red, filling the airtight chamber with suffocating heat and the acrid smell of burning sealant.
Inside, Flynn was on his knees, weeping uncontrollably. Sweat soaked through his tuxedo, plastering his hair to his pale forehead. Croft had already suffered a minor coronary, slumped in the corner against the server rack, gasping for shallow breaths of rapidly thinning oxygen.
"They're going to kill us," Flynn sobbed, his fingernails bleeding as he clawed at the reinforced hinges. "They’re going to burn right through that door and put a bullet in my head!"
Suddenly, the screen above the pedestal went dark. The red countdown paused at 00:02:14.
The hum of the servers quieted, and the crisp, clear audio of my voice came through the vault’s internal intercom system.
"Good evening, Flynn."
Flynn froze. His tear-streaked face snapped upward toward the hidden camera lens. "Sloan?! Sloan! Oh God, Sloan, please! Hear me! There are men outside! Terrorists! Mercenaries! They’re cutting through the door!"
"I know," I replied, my tone as calm and steady as a surgeon's blade. "I'm watching them on thermal imaging. In about ninety seconds, they’ll penetrate the upper bolt casing. Once they blow the seal, they won't shoot you immediately, Flynn. The Obsidian Trust operates on strict contractual recovery protocols. They will take you to a cargo vessel docked in Vancouver, and you will spend the rest of your natural life working off a sixty-million-dollar debt in an unregulated cobalt mine."
"No! No, no, no! You can't let them do this to me!" Flynn screamed into the camera, his hands clasped together in desperate prayer. "I'm your husband! I made a mistake, Sloan! My mother... it was all my mother! Cordelia pushed you! She was the one who demanded the house! I was just trying to keep the peace!"
"You stepped over me, Flynn," I reminded him, my voice devoid of emotion. "You took a sip of twenty-year-old scotch, adjusted your cuffs, and stepped over my bleeding body while I lay with a shattered femur on the marble. Do you remember what you said?"
Flynn’s voice choked in his throat. He shook his head frantically.
"You said: 'You should have just given it to her, Sloan.'"
A heavy thud rattled the vault door. A chunk of molten steel fell inward with a loud hiss, splashing against the concrete floor. Through the widening gap, the dark, emotionless eye of a thermal scope peered into the darkness.
"Sloan, please! What do you want?! I'll give you the house back! I'll sign the deed over right now!"
"The house is worthless to you now, Flynn," I said smoothly. "The land registry recorded your signature twelve hours ago. You are the sole liable party. However... my grandfather anticipated this exact scenario. There is a secondary override built into that pedestal."
Flynn scrambled on his hands and knees toward the pedestal, nearly knocking the mahogany box off its stand. "Where?! What override?!"
"Beneath the central server rack, there is a hardwired digital recording terminal," I instructed. "You will look directly into the auxiliary lens. You will state your full legal name, your date of birth, and your Social Security number. And then, you will give a full, detailed, sworn confession of how you and your mother plotted to defraud me, how Cordelia physically assaulted me and attempted to murder me by pushing me down the staircase, and how you coerced me into signing the transfer under duress."
Flynn hesitated for half a second. "If I confess... the police will arrest me!"
Outside, a heavy hydraulic spreader wedged into the gap. The steel groaned. The bolts were buckling.
"The police have soft beds and three meals a day, Flynn," I whispered. "The Obsidian Trust has concrete floors and meat hooks. Choose. You have thirty seconds."
"I'll do it! I'll do it!" Flynn shrieked.
He lunged toward the lens beneath the pedestal, gripping the metal edges until his knuckles turned pure white. Looking straight into the lens, tears and mucus streaming down his face, he began to speak.
He didn't hold back a single sordid detail. He confessed to draining my personal accounts over the past three years. He confessed to purchasing fraudulent life insurance riders in my name. He described, with sickening precision, how Cordelia had planned the confrontation at the top of the stairs, explicitly instructing him not to call an ambulance until they had secured the folder containing the deed.
"She pushed her!" Flynn yelled, trembling violently. "Cordelia grabbed her shoulders and shoved her with all her weight! And I watched! I let her do it because I wanted the five million dollars! It was all our fault! Sloan is completely innocent!"
On my monitor, the digital upload bar hit 100%. The raw video, along with the cryptographic timestamp and biometric confirmation, was automatically routed to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the State Attorney General’s Special Crimes Division, and the local Chief of Police.
"Thank you, Flynn," I said softly.
"Now open the door! Unlock the secret exit!" Flynn pleaded, banging his fists against the pedestal.
"The vault doesn't have a secret exit, Flynn," I said. "Arthur Vance was a logistics genius. He never built escape hatches for thieves."
"What?!"
"Look down at your feet."
Flynn looked down. In the center of the concrete floor, a small trap door popped open, revealing a reinforced pneumatic pressure cannister labeled HALON GAS DISCHARGE - EMERGENCY PROTOCOL.
"I didn't call the Obsidian Trust, Flynn," I revealed with a cold, triumphant smile. "Arthur Vance was the managing director of the Obsidian Trust. The men outside aren't mercenaries coming to liquidate you. They're my grandfather’s private executive security force. And they’ve been working for me since the day he died."
Flynn’s jaw dropped. His eyes dilated in sheer, unadulterated horror.
The vault door swung wide open. The tactical team stood in the blinding light, their weapons lowered, stepping aside as a woman in a sharply tailored charcoal suit walked into the chamber.
It was Phoebe.
Behind her stood two uniformed federal marshals with pairs of heavy steel handcuffs.

"Flynn Sterling," Phoebe said, holding up a federal arrest warrant. "You and your mother are under arrest for attempted murder, grand larceny, interstate wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit financial extortion."
Flynn collapsed onto the floor, completely shattered, sobbing into the dust as the marshals hauled him to his feet.
