Chapter 9 - THE SEIZURE OF PARADISE

At 10:00 AM the following morning, the commercial court judge issued an emergency warrant for the immediate provisional seizure of all real and personal property registered to Diego Morales and Marta Morales.

I stood on the tree-lined sidewalk outside the Pozuelo villa as three judicial bailiffs, flanked by National Police officers, taped the red official seizure notices across the wrought-iron front gates.

A flatbed tow truck was already winching Diego’s Porsche Cayenne onto its metal ramp. Behind it, a second truck was preparing to load Marta’s luxury SUV. Neighbors in the affluent gated community peered through their curtains and stepped out onto their manicured lawns, whispering behind their manicured hedges as the reality of the Morales family’s downfall unfolded in broad daylight.

Mateo Rivas walked up beside me, holding a manila folder containing the court’s preliminary restitution order.

“The judge moved with extraordinary speed,” Mateo said, handing me the certified decree. “Because Diego and Marta attempted to encumber your primary residence with fraudulent mezzanine debt, the court has declared the original sale null and void ab initio. The title to your Chamberí apartment has been restored to your sole name with zero encumbrances.”

I looked down at the document. My home was mine again. Clean, unencumbered, and legally protected for the rest of my life.

“What about Titan Capital’s claim?” I asked.

“Titan Capital has collapsed,” Mateo replied with a grim smile. “The National Tax Agency has initiated criminal bankruptcy proceedings against Javier Beltrán. The court ruled that their mortgage lien was fraudulent and unenforceable. Furthermore, the judge has placed an immediate judicial lien on this Pozuelo villa. When it is sold at public auction next month, the first €150,000 of proceeds will be transferred directly to your bank account as punitive restitution for emotional distress and legal expenses.”

As we spoke, the front door of the villa opened. Diego’s defense attorney walked out, carrying two small cardboard boxes of personal effects permitted by the court. Behind him, Diego’s mother stood on the porch, weeping into a handkerchief as she watched the luxury cars being towed down the street.

She looked at me across the lawn, her eyes filled with reproach. “Elena! How could you do this to your own daughter? She is your blood! Look at what you’ve done to their lives!”

I walked toward the gate, stopping just before the yellow police tape.

“I did not do this to your son and my daughter, Señora Morales,” I said with steady, unyielding dignity. “They wrote this invoice themselves. I simply refused to pay it.”
