Chapter 4 - THE SIEGE OF CRAGMERE

The sound of shattering glass from the southern conservatory echoed through the vast stone corridors like a gunshot.
Instant red emergency beacons flashed to life along the vaulted ceilings of the Rossi estate, bathing the mahogany paneling in a pulsing, bloody glow. From the lower levels, the distinct, rhythmic rattle of automatic weapons fire broke through the howling blizzard outside.
"Lockdown! Code Black!" Luca's voice roared through the internal comm system, accompanied by static and the heavy concussive thump of a shotgun blast. "They breached the lower terrace! Four vehicles, heavy armor! Carmine brought his personal hit squad!"
Alexander didn't panic. His transformation from a brooding patriarch into a ruthless wartime general took less than a heartbeat. He drew his Kimber 1911, racking the slide with a clean, metallic snap that sounded deafening in the marble foyer.
"Angelo!" Alexander commanded, his voice cutting through the rising blare of the security sirens. "Take the children to the sub-level bunker. Seal the blast doors. If anyone without a Rossi crest breaches that door, activate the gas fail-safe."
"Right away, Don Rossi," the elderly butler said, his calm exterior cracking as he rushed up the grand staircase.
Nora stepped forward, her heart hammering against her ribs, but her mind sharpening to a needle point. "What about the kids? Sofia was terrified before this even started—"
Alexander turned, grabbing Nora by the upper arms. His grip was firm, electric, but entirely controlled. He pulled her flush against his chest, looking down into her eyes with an intensity that took the breath straight from her lungs.
"You listen to me, Nora," he said, his baritone steady as the foundations beneath them. "Carmine Romano is a sadistic butcher. He wanted you as a trophy to humiliate your father. If he takes you alive, I will have to burn half of Chicago to pull your body out of his basement. You go with Angelo. You go into that vault with my children. You keep them safe. Can you do that?"
"I don't have a weapon, Alexander," Nora replied, her dark eyes flashing in the crimson emergency lights.
Alexander reached behind his back, unsnapped a secondary leather holster concealed under his jacket, and pulled out a sleek, compact SIG Sauer P365. He pressed the textured grip into her palm, closing her fingers around it. The metal was warm from his body.
"Thirteen rounds. One in the chamber," he said, his thumb brushing against her knuckles for a lingering, possessive second. "If anything breaches that vault door and it isn't me or Luca, you empty the magazine into its chest. Do you hear me?"
"I hear you," Nora whispered.
A heavy grenade detonated near the front courtyard, shaking the chandelier above them until crystal droplets rained down onto the marble floor. Alexander released her, spun on his heel, and sprinted down the southern gallery toward the sound of gunfire, his coat billowing behind him like the wings of a predatory bird.
Nora turned and bolted up the sweeping stairs, taking them two at a time, her bare feet gripping the wool runners.
On the second-floor landing, chaos had erupted. Sofia was crying, clutching Angelo’s sleeve, while nine-year-old Leo was wrestling with the old man, trying to wrench a vintage hunting rifle from the display cabinet on the wall.
"Let me have it!" Leo screamed, his face bright red. "I can shoot them from the window! I'm not hiding like a coward!"
"Master Leo, please! The Don gave strict orders!" Angelo pleaded, his frail arms struggling against the ferocious strength of the boy.
Further down the hall, four-year-old Mia was curled into a ball against the wainscoting, sobbing silently into her stuffed rabbit, while twelve-year-old Matteo stood over her like a stone sentinel, his jaw clenched so hard the tendons in his neck stood out like wires.
"Enough!" Nora’s voice cut through the corridor like a whip.
Leo froze, turning with wide, furious eyes. Sofia gasped, wiping her tear-stained nose on her pajama sleeve.
Nora strode down the hall, stepping between Leo and the gun cabinet. She knelt directly in front of the boy, grabbing him firmly by the shoulders. He tried to squirm away, baring his teeth like a trapped wolf, but Nora held him fast, refusing to yield an inch.
"You want to fight, Leo?" Nora said, her voice dropping into an intense, low whisper. "You want to be a soldier like your father?"
"I'm not a baby!" Leo spat, tears of frustration spilling over his lashes. "I can protect my family!"
"A soldier follows orders, Leo," Nora said, locking her dark eyes onto his. "Your father is downstairs holding off a strike team so you can survive. If you die in this hallway, his sacrifice means nothing. Real strength isn't dying with a rifle in your hands because you were too stubborn to retreat. Real strength is making sure your sisters make it into that vault alive. Can you protect Mia? Or are you too busy playing the hero?"
Leo stared at her, his chest heaving. The raw, reckless bravado in his eyes flickered, replaced by the crushing realization of his duty to his siblings. He looked over at tiny Mia, who was shivering on the floor, then back at Nora.
"I can protect her," Leo rasped, his voice breaking.
"Then move. Now," Nora commanded.
She scooped Mia up into her left arm, pressing the little girl’s trembling face against her neck, while keeping her right hand firmly wrapped around the SIG Sauer at her side. "Angelo, lead the way. Sofia, hold onto Leo’s jacket. Matteo, watch our rear."
They moved as a tight unit down the service stairs toward the sub-basement. The mansion groaned around them as explosions rocked the upper floors. Plaster dust drifted down from the ceiling like ghostly snow, coating Nora’s hair and the velvet of her dress.
They reached the heavy steel blast door hidden behind a wine rack in the deep cellar. Angelo punched a six-digit code into the biometric keypad, and with a heavy pneumatic hiss, the twelve-inch reinforced steel door swung inward, revealing a bunker equipped with cots, water filters, and a bank of surveillance monitors.
"Inside, everyone!" Angelo ushered the children through.
Nora set Mia down on a cot, wrapping a heavy wool blanket around the little girl’s shoulders. Leo immediately moved to the monitoring station, his hands resting on the console, his eyes scanning the flickering camera feeds.
On screen three, the front courtyard was a war zone. Two black SUVs were engulfed in flames, black smoke billowing into the blizzard. Bodies in tactical gear lay motionless across the snow.
On screen five—the grand foyer—Alexander was fighting like a demon possessed.
He moved with terrifying, lethal grace, using the marble pillars for cover, his Kimber barking fire. A man in black body armor rounded the staircase; Alexander stepped inside the man’s guard, drove an elbow into his throat, stripped his submachine gun in a single fluid motion, and fired a burst into two more attackers charging through the front double doors.
"Papa..." Sofia whispered, her tiny hands clutching Nora’s velvet skirt.
Suddenly, screen five flickered with static. A heavy figure in a customized combat rig strode into the foyer, flanked by three men carrying tactical shotguns. It was Carmine Romano’s eldest son, Viktor—a hulking brute known as the "Executioner of Cicero."
Viktor raised a grenade launcher, aiming it directly at the marble pillar Alexander was pinned behind.
"Alexander, watch out!" Nora gasped, her fingers digging into the console edge.
The grenade struck the base of the pillar. The screen exploded into a blinding flash of white dust and tumbling stone. The camera feed cut out, dissolving into black-and-white snow.
"No!" Leo screamed, pounding his fists against the monitors. "Papa!"
Sofia burst into hysterical wails, while Matteo stepped back from the screens, his face turning completely gray, his hands clenching into white-knuckled fists.
Then, from the corridor outside the vault door, came the heavy, dragging sound of combat boots.
A shadow crossed the narrow slit of reinforced bulletproof glass set into the steel door.
Someone was standing right outside.
Angelo reached for his sidearm, but his hands were shaking so violently the barrel rattled against the steel table.
Nora didn't hesitate. She stepped between the children and the vault door, raising the SIG Sauer with both hands, sighting down the barrel, her finger taking up the slack on the trigger.
A hand hit the glass from the outside—a bloody handprint smearing across the pane.

Then came a raspy, desperate whisper through the exterior intercom:
"Nora... open the door... they've got Alexander..."
