Chapter 6 - CORRIDORS OF DECEPTION

The power died instantly.

The massive floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse suite were suddenly the only source of illumination, casting long, eerie shadows across the boardroom from the distant streetlights below. The emergency generators kicked in with a low, hydraulic groan, bathing the corridors in an ominous amber glow.

“They’re cutting off our communications,” Marcus said, testing his encrypted satellite radio. “All frequencies are jammed. They’ve isolated the top five floors.”

Richard didn't panic. He walked over to the antique grandfather clock in the corner of his office, swung the face open, and entered a six-digit code into a concealed keypad. A hidden wall panel slid open, revealing an armory and a secondary hardline terminal connected directly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Chicago Field Office.

“Marcus, take Emma into the panic bunker behind the server vault,” Richard ordered, racking the slide of a customized tactical sidearm.

“No, Daddy!” Emma pleaded, grabbing his hand. “You can’t stay out here! There are too many of them!”

Richard knelt down before his daughter, taking her small, bruised face in his hands. “Emma, you did something extraordinary. You survived, you collected the truth, and you brought it home. For months, I was too busy with work to see the pain you were carrying. I let those monsters hurt you because I wasn't paying attention. That ends tonight. I am going to finish what you started.”

He handed her the USB drive and a small silver pendant shaped like a key. “This unlocks the external emergency data transmitter inside the vault. If anything happens to me, you plug this drive into that terminal and hit the red broadcast switch. It sends the files directly to the Department of Justice and every major news network in North America.”

“Richard!” Marcus called out, raising his rifle. “They’re blowing the elevator doors!”

A concussive blast blew the heavy stainless-steel elevator doors into the lobby corridor. Smoke and flashbang grenades poured into the hallway, blinding the cameras and setting off the fire suppression sprinklers.

Men in tactical body armor rushed through the smoke, weapons raised, sweeping the executive floor with surgical precision.

Vance stepped out behind them, wearing night-vision goggles and a Kevlar vest. “Take Hayes alive if possible! Eliminate the security team! Find that girl!”

Gunfire erupted down the long marble hallway.

Richard and his security detail used the reinforced concrete pillars for cover, returning precise, disciplined fire. The deafening roar of automatic weapons echoed through the glass-paneled offices, shattering displays and sending reams of documents flying through the air like artificial snow.

Marcus shoved Emma toward the heavy vault door at the end of the hall. “Get inside, Emma! Lock it from the inner console!”

Emma scrambled toward the heavy circular steel door. But just as she reached the threshold, a laser sight swept across her chest.

Standing at the adjacent emergency stairwell door was Madison’s father—Judge Arthur Sterling himself, holding a chrome revolver with trembling, desperate hands.

“Give me the drive, little girl,” Judge Sterling sneered, his tailored suit stained with sweat and rain. “Your father ruined my family’s future when he refused our terms. Give it to me, or you won't live to see morning!”
