Chapter 9 - THE COLLAPSE OF AN EMPIRE

The fallout from the sentencing struck Luca’s empire like a tactical warhead.
Within forty-eight hours of the verdict, the federal bankruptcy trustee initiated the complete liquidation of Luca’s medical consulting firm, seizing twelve million dollars in luxury real estate, high-end sports cars, and offshore holding portfolios. Because the court had found Luca and Chloe guilty of intentional torts and criminal fraud against me, the civil judgment Marcus filed on my behalf was granted absolute priority.
Every single cent that Luca had stolen from my grandmother’s trust was returned, accompanied by triple punitive damages.
I stood in the driveway of our suburban home on a crisp Tuesday morning, watching an industrial moving crew pack up the remnants of my past life. The massive five-bedroom house—the house where Fiona had been forced to sleep on the kitchen floor—had been sold to a private developer.
The front lawn was stripped bare. The designer furniture that Chloe had selected with my stolen money was being hauled into auction trucks to pay off the federal restitution orders.
A battered grey taxi pulled up to the curb.
The back door opened, and Chloe stepped out. She wore an oversized thrift-store sweater over her eight-month baby bump, her ankle wrapped in a thick, black electronic monitoring beacon that flashed with a steady red tracking light. She had no makeup on, her skin was pale and sallow, and she carried her belongings in two cheap plastic grocery bags.
Under the terms of her home confinement, she had been granted a two-hour supervised window by her parole officer to collect her personal clothing from the guest room before the house was handed over to the new owners.
She stopped at the foot of the driveway, looking at me.
I stood on the porch, wearing a warm wool sweater and jeans, holding a cup of steaming black coffee.
“Are you happy now, Jessi?” Chloe croaked, her voice raspy, stripped of all its former venom and arrogance. “You took everything. Luca is in maximum security. Mom is facing ten years in federal prison. And in six weeks, the state is going to take my baby away the second it’s born in the prison ward. Are you satisfied?”
I took a slow sip of my coffee and walked down the brick steps, stopping five paces away from her.
“You did this to yourself, Chloe,” I said softly. “You had a family that would have moved mountains for you. I would have given you half of everything I owned if you had just asked for help. But you didn't want help. You wanted what was mine. You wanted to watch me break.”
Tears welled in Chloe’s eyes, spilling over her hollow cheeks. “I have nowhere to go, Jessi. Mom’s house was foreclosed on. The clinic is gone. Nobody in town will hire me. The parole board is putting me in a halfway house on the south side. Please… just let me stay in the carriage house behind grandma’s property in Maine. Just until the baby comes.”
I looked at the woman who shared my blood, feeling a profound, quiet sorrow—not for the pathetic creature standing before me, but for the sister she could have been.
“No, Chloe,” I said firmly. “Actions have consequences. You chose Luca. You chose the money. You chose to poison my daughter. The carriage house in Maine is being renovated into an art studio for Fiona.”
“What about the baby?” Chloe sobbed, dropping her grocery bags onto the damp asphalt. “She’s your niece, Jessi! Are you going to let her grow up in the foster care system? Are you going to let strangers raise my daughter?”
I looked at her swollen stomach, feeling the tiny life kicking inside, completely innocent of the sins of its treacherous parents.
“The state will not give her to strangers,” I said quietly.
Chloe looked up, her breath catching in her throat. “What?”
“Marcus filed the kinship adoption petition yesterday morning,” I told her, my voice ringing with calm authority. “When your daughter is born, she will be placed directly into my custody. I will raise her. She will grow up knowing love, honesty, and safety. She will grow up calling me Mama, and she will have Fiona as her big sister. She will never know the poison you and Luca carried in your hearts.”

Chloe collapsed to her knees on the driveway, weeping uncontrollably, burying her face in her trembling hands. “You’re taking my baby…”
“No,” I said, turning my back on her and walking toward my car. “I am saving her from you.”
