Chapter 1 - THE MESSAGE BEHIND THE GLASS

Eight-year-old Wren Holloway arrives at Dr. Callum Mercer’s pediatric dental clinic during a crowded Saturday open house with a high fever, a badly infected molar, a swollen cheek, and an elegant woman named Celestine Holloway who claims to be her mother.

Almost immediately, Callum senses something is wrong.

Wren flinches whenever Celestine touches her, refuses to answer questions without first looking at the woman, and hides bruises beneath a heavy cardigan despite the warm clinic. When the cardigan slips, Callum sees finger-shaped marks covering the child’s arm.

The sight forces him to remember Emmett Rusk, a six-year-old patient he failed to protect ten years earlier after believing an abusive stepfather’s explanation for suspicious injuries.

Callum refuses to make that mistake again.

During preparations for Wren’s dental X-ray, the girl seizes a permanent marker, locks herself inside the imaging room, and writes three desperate messages across the back of a lead apron.

SHE IS NOT MY MOTHER.

PLEASE DON’T LET HER TAKE ME BACK.

TO THE BASEMENT.

As Celestine pounds against the door demanding that Wren be returned to her, Callum quietly activates the clinic’s emergency child-protection procedure.

Protocol Red.

Then he steps between Celestine and the frightened child and tells her the one thing she never expected to hear.

Wren is not leaving with her.
