Chapter 1 - THE NIGHT THE SKY FELL

Nora Bennett had spent twelve years believing the worst thing the sea had ever taken from her was her father.
Then, at two in the morning, the sky itself came apart.
She was working alone inside Bennett Marine Repair on the edge of Grayhaven Harbor when a private jet dropped low over the bay, clipped the black water at an impossible angle, and broke apart less than half a mile from shore.
Nora did not wait for rescue crews.
She grabbed a flashlight, pulled on a life jacket, and went into the freezing water.
Among burning fuel, twisted metal, and sinking wreckage, she found one survivor.
A badly injured man trapped inside the fuselage.
His name was Adrian Cole.
That name carried weight in Grayhaven.
The Cole family owned shipping terminals, hotels, construction companies, investment firms, and enough waterfront property to influence nearly every major decision made along the coast. Officially, they were one of the wealthiest families in the state.
Unofficially, darker stories followed them everywhere.
Nora dragged Adrian to shore, treated his wounds, and brought him into the small house attached to her repair shop. For hours, she kept him alive with nothing more than first-aid supplies, towels, stubbornness, and the same instinct that had helped her survive every storm Grayhaven had thrown at her.
When Adrian finally regained consciousness, he seemed less relieved to be alive than frightened that someone might learn he was.
Then engines appeared outside.
One.
Two.
Five.
Black SUVs rolled onto Nora's property shortly before dawn and blocked every road leading away from the house.
Adrian's entire expression changed.
He ordered Nora to shut off every light.
He told her the plane had not suffered an accident.
Someone had deliberately redirected it.
Someone powerful.
Someone who had expected every person aboard to die.
And now that person knew Adrian had survived.
Nora demanded to know why anyone would send a multimillion-dollar aircraft into the ocean just to kill him.
Adrian looked toward the dark windows.
"Because of what I found."
Before he could explain, something slammed into Nora's front door.
The frame cracked.
Another impact shook the hallway.
Nora reached beneath a cabinet and grabbed the heavy flare gun she kept for emergencies.
Adrian forced himself upright despite the blood soaking through his bandage.
The door exploded inward.
Armed men filled the porch.
But the person who stepped through them was not the assassin Adrian expected.
He was a tall man in his late sixties, silver-haired, dressed in a charcoal coat worth more than Nora's truck, with rain on his shoulders and something close to terror in his eyes.
Adrian stared at him.
"Dad?"
Charles Cole looked at his injured son.
Then he looked at Nora.
And the moment he saw her face, he went completely still.
Not confused.
Not curious.
He looked as though he had just seen a ghost.
"Bennett," Charles whispered.
Nora tightened her grip on the flare gun.
"How do you know my name?"
Charles Cole's face went pale.
May you like
Because twelve years earlier, the last person who had seen Nora's father alive had been Charles Cole.
And he had spent every year since making certain Nora never found out why.
