Chapter 1 - THE WORDS MY SON WAS TOLD TO SAY

Ten-year-old Beckett Whitaker returned to his father Noah’s Asheville home after a weekend with his mother, Mallory Vance, moving so carefully that every step appeared painful. Normally energetic and talkative, Beckett refused to sit, avoided eye contact, and insisted nothing had happened.

Mallory dismissed his discomfort before driving away, warning Noah not to “make a big deal out of it.”

Once they were alone, Noah gently asked again.

Beckett finally whispered, “I’m supposed to say I’m fine.”

Those words changed everything.

Ignoring Beckett’s fear that his mother would be angry, Noah immediately drove him to the hospital. He expected doctors to tell him whether his son had suffered an accident.
