Chapter 1 - THE DAUGHTER THEY EXPECTED TO OBEY

Caroline spent most of her life being the daughter who understood.
When her younger sister Haley received more attention, more money, and more opportunities, Caroline was always told she was mature enough not to need the same things.
So Caroline learned to work.
While Haley traveled through Europe on their parents’ money, Caroline worked construction jobs in Albany, took night classes, and eventually bought a neglected century-old house in Beacon, New York.
Everyone told her it was a mistake.
Instead, Caroline rebuilt it with her own hands.
The old house became more than property. It became proof that she could create something no one in her family had given her.
Years later, when Haley became engaged to Ethan Caldwell, the son of a wealthy Manhattan family, Caroline’s parents began suggesting that Caroline should give her beautifully restored home to the newlyweds.
Caroline refused.
Her father, Anthony, was not accustomed to hearing no.
At Haley’s lavish Hudson Valley wedding, Caroline arrived knowing her family wanted her there partly to preserve the image of a perfect, united family.
She also knew something else.
For once, she had come prepared.
And as more than two hundred guests gathered beside the lantern-lit lake, Caroline watched her father raise his glass and step toward the microphone.

She knew the performance was about to begin.
What Anthony did not know was that Caroline had finally stopped being afraid of what would happen when she refused to follow the script.
