Chapter 1 - THE BRASS KEY ON THE TABLE
Claire Bennett had spent her entire life being assigned the role of the difficult daughter while her older sister Vanessa was protected from every consequence.
That pattern finally exploded during a family dinner when Vanessa dumped an entire glass of red wine over Claire’s head and ordered her out of the house by sunrise. Their mother, Diane, applauded. Their father, Robert, blamed Claire for provoking the scene.
Instead of arguing, Claire placed a brass key beside her plate.
The key had been left to her by her late grandmother, Evelyn Mercer.
Three months earlier, Evelyn’s attorney, Martin Hale, had revealed that Evelyn had changed her estate plan shortly before her death. Any beneficiary proven to have committed coercion, fraud, theft, intimidation, or deliberate reputational harm against Claire could lose their inheritance.
Evelyn had also directed Claire toward a mysterious blue ledger.
Claire eventually discovered that ledger hidden in Vanessa’s basement. Inside were practiced copies of Claire’s signature, fraudulent credit applications, old addresses, account numbers, and documents connected to accounts opened illegally in Claire’s name. Even worse, Claire learned that her family had spent years quietly creating written records portraying her as emotionally unstable and financially irresponsible.
Then Claire obtained security footage from Evelyn’s old study.
During the wine-soaked dinner, she cast the footage onto Vanessa’s television.
The video showed Vanessa entering Evelyn’s study at 2:13 a.m., wearing gloves. Vanessa stole Evelyn’s pearl necklace and opened an envelope intended for Martin.
But Vanessa had not been alone.
Reflected in the mirror behind her was Robert Bennett.
Claire’s father.
